Anyone else getting a loud "whirrr" sound from their manual transmission? I noticed it now that it is starting to get cold and I called the dealer and they said if you notice it any other time than when it's cold bring it in. It goes away when the trans warms up. Is this normal? Any ideas?

Mine was doing it a bit last year so I drained the differential and put in Mobilube HD LS 80W-90. Have not heard it since.

Hmm, I guess it could be the diff. This sound seems to be coming from right below the shifter but then again it is tough to pin point it exactly while driving.

You might want to change the fluid in the tranny. Mine isn't making that noise but if it was, that would be the first thing I changed.

Does it make sense though that it only happens when cold? I know the fluid is less viscous when cold.

Well I think it does. Since the oil is less viscous it takes longer for all of the parts to get lubricated properly. Forgot to ask, how long does it take before the noise goes away. 30 seconds, 1 minute, etc.

Usually about 3 to 5 minutes if the car is completely cold i.e. if it sat over night. Also, I can hear the sound most prominantly at lower RPMs such as when I am crusing in 5th gear at around 55 mph.

I'd get the dealer to take a look at it. The temp around here is about the same where you live and my car doesn't make that noise. Hard to say if it is the tranny or something else that is just resonating back to that location.

It's due for an inspection next month anyway and I am having them do it so I think I will have them check that out too.

Very funny Tom and you are not getting my car.

I don't have an exact build date. I took delivery last November so it was built sometime before that.

Mine does it also. I thought it was maybe the synchros kicking in. I didn't notice it until I was riding around with my mom and wife Sunday. They could both hear it also. It definitely comes through the shifter, though, because I can feel the resonance in the handle.

they are ordering the parts to the tranny as we speak. Did you read the tsb regarding this tranny noise?

No, do you have a link to the TSB. I haven't seen it yet. The only ones I have seen regarding noise from the drivetrain were regarding the rear end.

I have this problem, there is a really loud "whine", but it only occurs when I am giving it gas at about 55mph in 5th gear. Have you found a solution to this yet???
