I know when I had my little slip up with my garage ... I noticed swirls in my paint's finish when I went to pick it up and I refused to take it.
They re did the paint job ... and low and behold, the hsitty swirls were gone ...
If a job is not right, don't let them screw you over
unfortunately i've been put in the exact situation you described above. i had another little incident (worst luck ever so far with a car) and the passenger side needed bodywork...picked it up when it was dark, took it home to the lighted garage...swirls down the entire side of the car...almost looks like they sanded it...ran my hand down the side of the car...smooth from side mirror to half-way back on rear quarter panel, then gets "rough" to the touch. they didn't even bother fixing the door handle (all scratched up)...in fact, it's loose now and it wasn't before.

anyone have any advice for what to say when i take it back?

sounds about right. see everytime i've taken it in they keep it for a while, but claim they don't have any loaner cars because the body shop doesn't have loaners. both times it has been in for insurance claim work, and i didn't have auto-renter insurance...so i didn't think i had any recourse...now that they'll be repairing an issue they caused i think it's well within my right to require that they give me a loaner vehicle. you think so?
