Holy Crap!
I live outside Charlotte, NC. 10 years ago I bought my house (3br/2ba) on 1.2 acres in a new development for $128k...put 20% down and my PITI $998.....I can't imagine paying 3x or 4x that amount...How can people out there pay that? They HAVE to have higher wages in So Cal...right? I complain about high city taxes ($1560) guess I should think again!
I put $5k down on my $28k and my 60 month payment is $420...(credit union)...my insurance is a little over $100 per month (39 and no tickets...knock wood...since I was 16). Gas is in the $1.50 to $1.60 here

After reading this thread I thought I'd better call and get a quote on my insurance before my car gets here. I know... insurance rates probably shouldn't be an after thought, but for this car, I figured I would MAKE it work somehow. I was expecting to pay about double what I do now. Well for once I actually got some good news from the insurance company... it looks like I will only be paying $160 more per year for the Mustang than my '02 Jeep Liberty that I'm trading in!
With the extra money I am putting down on the purchase, I may actually end up lowering my monthly bills! B)

I DESPISE living in SoCal.
I wanna move to Colorado, Denver area, or Texas, Houston area. BUT, I wanna live out in the country areas. Ya know, where you hafta drive 10 minutes to get to town. I also LOVE Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Conneticut. There is just no way I can get my husband to move us all the way across the country.

I am with you Jessica, my wife is the biggest hurdle in regards to moving but since I have been showing her what kind of homes we can buy out of state FOR CASH from selling our property she has started to warm up to the idea.
ie 2,800 sq ft, Built 2004 on 1 acre in or near Boise Idaho with all the nice features vaulted ceilings, 4 BDR 2 1/2 Bath with seperate family room and dining rooms, bay windows, double panes etc 3 car garage.... $250,000
Man even if I did not buy it outright and took like a $40k note over 30 years my payments would be lower then my wifes truck payment (2005 Tundra TRD Double CAB with all the goodies)

I have a 4bdr/2bth, a smidge less than 1.5 acres and I pay $869/month. And I thought I paid a lot of $$$$ for my house. Good God I couldn't imagine paying $2k-$4k for a house payment. :shock: :shock:
My car payment is $319/month after $13k down. Financed the rest for 60 months @ 4.65%. I hope to pay it off sooner though - hubby is really wanting a black '05, but we can't afford two payments right now.

Good God. I need a better job. I am going to be lookin to move out here pretty soon (21, just got done with college). I can't see myself leaving the beach. Jeesh, but $3k a month!

Rick, there are some areas of SD county that are cheaper, but OC at the beach? Not gonna happen believe me. When we sold our house we looked from SD County to LA County on the coast, and they went from $2000 to $10,000.

I despised living in SoCal as well, as soon as I was out of the military back to AZ I went. My income doubled and my living expenses plummeted.
The payment on our new Honda Pilot is ALMOST as much as our house payment.
Back to topic, I'm looking at $300 a month on the Stang and $85.00 on insurance, now if it could only get here :bang:

) and let me tell you, New England might not be as bad as SoCal, but its still high. Taxachusetts will kill you, but they have the work(usually), every where else, you pretty much are limited by finding decent work. My wife is from New Hampshire and her family is still there mostly, I'm from Alabammy like April and would love to move back there sometime, but I'm still limited by work.

400/month payment and 150/month insurance(guessing as we have the Explorer on there too).
House: 3600 sq ft plus 1400-1600 sq ft basement (in process of finishing that). 4BR 3 1/2 Bath plus 1 Bath in basement. Only a 1/3 acre lot.
1600/month, includes prop tax and Ins, plus HOA of 300/year. Great subdivision with plenty of amenities for kids, ie no golf course.
Oh yeah, 3-car garage

For that kind of cash you can own bammy for your own.
That's one of the thousand reasons why we are here instead of NY. IF my house were in NY would sell for $500k+. Same houses in my neighborhood list for $135-150k. Two story- basement, garages, acre lots.
For $500k here you could own half a county.

Guess I'm one of the few who enjoys living in SoCal....the 1000 Oaks area that is - I wouldn't want to live in the LA basin or SF valley areas though. 6 years ago I bought my home here in T.O. for $185K and my payment is only 1200/mo....my home just appraised at $576K - and I do feel for the young couples trying to buy their 1st home!
Anyway I really like the nice weather we have here and since I'm a sportbike rider - the local mountains are wonderful too. Another plus is living in Ventura county I enjoy lower sales taxes, hardley any crime, and we still have rural areas.

My 3 br / 3 bath farmhouse in Vermont, with guest cottage, HUGE barn (for storin' the Stang in the winter), and 40 acres ....costs me $750/mo.
I figure my new 05 GT will cost me ~ $500/mo,,,no money down.
Insurance will double though.....

The payment is definetely a consideration on my part. I want the GT. I was going to get a V6, but I figured it would be settling. However, I do not want a payment over $400 a month, so its going to take a few bucks down.
As for house payment...$875/month includes taxes and insurance. Under 13 years left to pay on it.

Ponygirl, I was also wondering where you built where the property value has risen like that. I'm still renting in Maryland Heights (22 yr old w/ new job right out of college), and am looking to buy/build somewhere in the area.
Maverick... Aerospace Community Credit Union is giving me 4.25% for 5 years, I'll pay it off sooner than that though.
