the tire pressure gauges in the 06.....

There is no TPMS on the 2006 Mustangs. It was postponed to the '07 model year.

You can DO that?

I have an '06 GT and I can confirm that there is a low tire pressure warning light on the dash cluster. It is also shown in the '06 manual. I only have 2K miles on my GT and have yet to see this warning light activated and hopefully won't have to see it on anytime soon. I have an '04 Explorer with TPMS on it and have found it very useful. It is not a "flat or blowout" only indicator like some have incorrectly suggested. It works very well with the messaging system to indicate low pressure that can be addressed while the tire is drivable and then indicates critically low before the tire goes completely flat giving you time to add air or repair.
I remember reading somewhere that the new TPMS systems use an RFID transmitter on each pressure sensor. Here's an article about a Philips Semiconductor system that uses RFID:

I am hoping my GT came from the factory with functional sensors. Let me clarify--I have it on my Explorer and have seen it work. On my GT instrument cluster I can see an unlit indicator light for low tire pressure. I have yet to see it lit and do not know if it is integrated with the message center like the TPMS on my Explorer. Not real anxious to flatten a tire yet to find out for sure!
I too have an 05 Explorer that has this system and it works well.
About two months back, the light had come on at start up and then would go out after driving a few miles. It seems as though the pressure was right at the point where it would set off the sensor when cold, and then after a couple miles of driving, the air inside the tire would heat up and expand just enough to get the pressure just past the threshold of setting off the sensor. Upon checking, pressure in one tire was around 26-27 psi, and 35 is recommended. The tire did not even really look low visually either. Upon inspection, I found that there was a nail in the tire, so it is a useful system, especially if you are losing pressure slowly.
There is a light on the cluster, but I do not know if the system is active on the 2006 or not. I was under the impression that not only did the 2006 have it, but the 2005 as well, but perhaps it was delayed for whatever reason. I may have to do a little test tomorrow to see if it has it or not.

Go flatten a GT tire and let me know what happens!

The indicator light is there, but the sensors are not.
Ford knew when they redesigned the Mustang that they'd need TPMS by 07, so they designed a spot for the indicator light into the IP. But the system will not be functional until 07.

After doing a little checking, I can confirm that the new Mustang Does Not have the TPMS yet. At start up on my Explorer, the light illuminates for a second, but does not illuminate on the Mustang.
I checked in the owners guide, and as shown in the picture below, Ford intentionally left the place where the light is located blank in their diagram of the cluster.
I'm just curious why they have had to delay it, as it is not a new technology to Ford, so why the delay. Only sensible reason I can think of was just cost reduction until the system is mandatory.
