Did I read that if you get new wheels that you may not be able to use the tire pressure gauge that is in the 06?

It's a dummy gauge though, similar to the other gauges (minus tach, speedo and gas of course). For example either your tires have pressure, or they don't. Not how much pressure is in them.

I read somewhere (true or not) that they are now a requirement on all cars sold in the U.S. 2006 model year and up.

If you get new wheels, you need new sensors.

I have never needed an idiot light to tell me I have a flat. The car has its own way of letting me know.

If the system is like the one on my Windstar there are no sensors. It uses the ABS brake sensors to determine if one wheel is turning faster than the others. It has been less than reliable in the van, going off for no reason. Several times when it has gone off, I pulled off of a busy interstate thinking I had a flat, but I check the pressure with a gauge and all is well. Took it in to 2 different dealers and they say everything checks out ok.

I was going to say, it sounds like a more luxurious item that has never been in these cars. I was wondering what might be next...heated seats???

You could be entirely right, I will look more into the sensors thing.

Ok this is what I have found so far:

This was found on Autoblog.com:

Tire pressure monitors standard by 2008
Posted Apr 8, 2005, 8:00 AM ET by Walter J Keegan Jr

"All new four-wheel vehicles with a gross vehicle rating of 10,000 or less will be required to be equipped with tire pressure monitors by 2008. All passenger cars must comply by 2006. The legislation finds the cheaper “indirect†systems that use the ABS to gauge tire pressure not good enough, requiring a monitor installed on each wheel. The system will set off a dashboard warning light if any tire falls 25% below the recommended inflation pressure. Each system will cost manufacturers $48.44 to $69.89 per vehicle to install."

As far as from Ford themselves, this is all I have found yet:
https://www.fleet.ford.com/showroom/2006fle...006-mustang.asp

Integrated Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) comes standard on all 2006 Mustangs

This legislation is in direct response to the Exploder incident from a few years ago with the tire blowout problems. Firestones story is that the reason for the blowouts was underinflation.

There are a couple of ways they can do this. The C5 Corvette had a sensor on a band inside the wheel. Others have the sensor built right into the valve stem. They send the signal via RF to the computer. Some have batteries and others use the rotation of the wheel to generate power for the sensor. You would end up having to transfer the sensors to your aftermarket wheels.

If drivers weren't so stupid, these devices and this legislation wouldn't be needed.

Thats one way of putting it.

If its accurate, it would be usefull for higheway incidents when you run over something going 70 mph, and you slowly lose pressure.

Agreed.

Ive been at Goodyear for the last 15 years of employment, and these things are a pain in the hiney!
Too much to worry about when changing over rims/tires.
Not cheap to replace a broken sensor either.

Just a curiousity as I hadn't sat in a '06.

Is the TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) just an idiot light? If you have IUP does it tell you on the message center?

As said...just wondering as it was a bell & whistle I wouldn't have minded having.

I think it just states that the tires have air in them, (idiot light). Atleast that is what I remember people on here saying.

There is no TPMS on the 2006 Mustangs. It was postponed to the '07 model year.

Would not be very helpful IMO. I check my tires weekly and most of the time if there were a serious leak you would know it.
