So I replaced the thermostat housing on my 2007 Mustang V6 about a month ago because it had cracked. Well this morning my car is overheating again. I'm waiting for it to cool down to check it but meanwhile: if it is the thermostat housing again, would this cast aluminum part I found on eBay be a good replacement? Are you sure it's actually overheating? When the temperature started to warm up for spring, my gauge started failing and made it look like it was overheating.

We had the leak on my son's 2006 V6 when it was about 5 years old, and the housing & thermostat (and maybe a hose?) were replaced. 2 years later it was overheating. Replacing the thermostat again is what fixed it.

Yes it was definitely overheating, unfortunately. I could hear it, see it, and smell coolant.

Bummer. You mentioned changing the housing when it cracked initially, but did you also replace the thermostat?

In either case...if the housing isn't cracked or otherwise defective, I wouldn't bother replacing it. I'd just get a new thermostat, and be very careful when tightening everything down.

The thermostat is definitely cracked again. It's just frustrating that it has only been about a month. Is there anything else we should be checking that could cause it to fail more quickly?

Yeah I meant thermostat housing....... Lol. We didn't change the thermometer the first time but we will this time just in case. Thank you!

In our case, the thermostat housing was still good two years, so I just replaced the thermostat and the o-ring that seals it. Still good to date, after another couple years.

I replaced my housing around 60,000 as preventative maint. It hadnt failed. I also replaced all the orings thermostat and sensor( because the oem sensor does not fit right in the replacement housings), and all my hoses. I just replaced the housing again at 120,000, this time i didnt replace the sensor. So ive not had one fail on me yet. The metal housing looks good, but for the price of 3 oem housings, i dought i`ll get another 150,000+miles on the engine. Tough call.

Use a Ford OEM thermostat and don't over torque the upper and lower housing bolts. You can get a spec for your 07 but it may be the same as an 05, which torque spec I have is, lower bolts 9 lb-ft {foot} and upper bolts are only 89 lb-in {inch}.

The housing is a luck of the draw part. My 2006 had no problems until 199,881 miles when the housing finally split. Others have had to replace them several times in that many miles. Just depends it appears because my car was not driven easily (lots of highway and drag strip miles on it)

Hi I had the same problem and had my thermostat housing replaced at the ford garage on my 09 4.0 v6. I purchased a ford ESP basecare warranty which mentions that it covers the thermostat housing. However the ford garage are trying to charge me over $1,000 as they say it's not covered, even though it clearly states that it is covered. I haven't paid yet. Any advice

Well, I sure wouldn't pay it. Have they done the work? You'll need to work out exactly what the warranty covers.
