It isn't just about the bench racing. The Ford GT is a supercar in performance, technology, style and status. The Z06 is supercar in performance and technology, but, most people can't recognize that it is a special Vette. I assure you, park both next to each other and the GT draws the biggest crowd.

No arguments there the average onlooker will only see a GT if it is parked beside a Z06

Granted, the Z06 is very close to the GT in capability, probably a better daily driver for sure, and offers a lot more bang for the buck - but it definitely is not = to the GT in 0-60 or top speed.

Not sure what stats you're using here but here are the actual figures:

Ford GT
Best lap time 1:32.45
Best lap average speed (mph) 73.2
0-60 mph/quarter-mile (sec) 3.8/12.2
Braking 70-0 mph (ft) 156
Cornering l/r (g) 1.03/1.01
Weight (lb) 3489
Distribution f/r (%) 43.4/56.6
Top speed (mph) 205
Chevrolet Corvette Z06
Best lap time 1:32.75
Best lap average speed (mph) 73.0
0-60 mph/quarter-mile (sec) 4.1/12.0
Braking 70-0 mph (ft) 149
Cornering l/r (g) 1.10/1.09
Weight (lb) 3147
Distribution f/r (%) 50.9/49.1
Top speed (mph) 198
[/quote]

Imagine if the tires on the Z06 were new instead of nearly to the wear bars.

Also those tops speeds are just where they are limited at, the Gt is capable of being faster and that is proven but I have not seen any reports with a Z06 Top speed test.

Those are weak numbers for the Z06 and probably for the GT. I've seen both at the track and they were dead nuts. .3 of a second lap time could be accountable for a ton of things. The GT could be easier to drive at the limit. Again, they are about as even as I've seen two cars. I know this is a Ford site, but guys give credit where it's due.

You want to give us an estimate on what a Z06 would cost if it had production numbers of the GT, and a chassis/development costs soley for itself, etc.?
Nope and I don't really care to.

I would say I agree, but what I saw is the opposite. In October, I was at a track event in Joliet, IL. There were 2 Ford GTs there and one brand new Z06. The Z06 still had temp tags on it even, which I thought was funny. Everyone was flocking to the Z06. I personally walked over to the GT and checked it out. I can see a Z06 at the Chevy dealer, but it's much harder to get a glimpse of the GT.

That surprises me. IT must have been a bunch of enthusiast like us. WE would know what the Z06 represented. I would give nearly equal respect to the Z06. I just think in the general public. The GT gets the girl.

Yea it was at a road course, which is all car guys. I think it was because the car just came out and it was at the track. I like the stealth factor though. If the Z06 blends in with regular Vettes, it is fine by me. Makes it harder for John Law to distinguish

Last time I checked John Law only cared what his speed gun told him. That and the fact that some cops won't persue the really high performance cars as it is too dangerous and they can't begin to keep up if the driver knows what he is doing.

And that is exactly why red cars get more tickets

I can't back that up

Actually, I think the argument that says the Z06 is nearly as good as the GT is just far too simplistic. First of all the GT is severly under-tired. With that kind of weight, hp, and torque it should be wearing wider wheels and tires than the Z06 (at least in back) and instead we have notably smaller wheels and tires than the Z06.

Also, the GT has a nearly race ready structure right now as is. Lose it in a GT at 125mph and that fact is at least somewhat comforting. The Vette's chassis works great for handling and is light, but wreck that thing at 125mph and my bet is that odds are much better somebody is going to be calling your mother to inform her that she is now one son short.

For people who truly want to go fast, have the coin, and don't mind selecting a better set of shoes for their car I think the GT is easily the better pick.

Also, in response to your earlier post, I have seen a lot of good results psoted for C5 Z06 autocross cars, but often they are in line with the SVT Focus some competitors run. And, on the autocross courses I am accustomed to, very short and a lot of very tight turns, C5's have always proved large and unweildy and have never done very well. Those are the circumstances I am referring to.

Simplistic, definetly not. Again, this is a Ford site so everyone will obviously defend the Ford. I tend to have no brand loyalty; I will buy what performs. The GT and Z06 are both under-tired. I know that the C6 Z06 uses Goodyear F1 EMTs and IIRC the GT does too. Both cars have no wear near race car safety structures. If you lose it at 125 in both cars, better hope your life insurance policy is intact. Chevy offers a lot more performance for the dollar in the Z06, that was my original point.

Lose it in anything at 125 and hit something solid at that speed and you won't be going home.

The Z06 is the better choice for a daily driver and offers much more bang for the buck. But comparing it to the GT is like comparing it to a Ferrari F430 - the Z06 will never be considered an exotic, if for no other reason than its price and badge. The Z06 will probably outperform the F430 too, but if you could have one for a day to drive around in, which would it be?

End of discussion.

If I was to purchase a car to just "drive around in" an Mercedes S55 would be my choice. If I was to buy a car like the Ford GT or Z06, I would purchase the car that offers the best performance for the money. I really can care less about being seen, which is what you are getting when you buy an F430 for example.

Thought so. Comparing price points between the two just really doesn't make sense, because the argument of why the GT is twice the cost just doesn't hold.

I said if you could have one for a day to drive around in. No money involved.

As to "being seen," it's true, Ferraris are primarily for the uber rich who want to scream, "Look at me!" But they're also extraordinarily poised and well-balanced cars; craftsmanship, engineering and the driving experience doesn't get any better than Ferrari in a mid-range supercar.

If the GT has a top speed of 205 mph, (some say it's still governed but what's the point of governing at 205 mph, since there can't be that much left in it), what do you guys think the top speed (ungoverned) of the GT500 would be? Seeing as the powerplant is almost the same. Any guesses???
