The Tao of Manual Drive
#21
On my last tank, I shifted consistently around 2000rpm, coasted towards red lights and drove it gently. I managed to average 22MPG with 50/50 city/highway.
That's on a bone stock GT with about 3100 miles on the odometer.

I'm cheap, so I always drive to work in 5th gear, hitting it ASAP after every light. Save the gas for something worthwhile rather than commuting (yaawn!)
Hope you guys are all double-clutching.
Hehe..Your synchros will last forever and you get to feel like Lt. Bullitt...
Dunno if it helps the clutch much; I hear the less time you are declutched (clutch-in), the better. Efficient in terms of tranny parts.
Just somethin' to try.

If idle is under 1000 why can't you drive at 1000? You can go 4mph in 1st and not hurt anything...

If you're in 5th at 35, how is that good. The car will sense a big load and run rich, so it's almost meaningless to run at such low rpm.
At least in theory, but if you're getting 35 mpg, then it must be good, and you can't question real results.
It just makes more sense to me, to have the car opened up a bit to run a proper A/F and still save gas at low proper rpms.
I drive gently, and open, and easily get just over 30 mpg. Anything is ok I suppose as long as you get results you're happy with.

I've noticed that after I put my Bassani mufflers on the mpg meter has been wayy lower then it was right before. Was reading full bars at like 65mph or so before and now it gets 4 bars. I don't know if I did something wrong or what.
