Yeah, it seems like he could put in a warranty claim if it was a defective tire.

Call and make a claim. I had similar issues with a Michelin Pilot Sport and a Falken Ziex. I had to ship both tires by UPS so they could be x-rayed and the companies could determine what caused the problem. In both of my cases it was dertmined that the tire was faulty and all damages were paid. By far the worse incident was with the Ziex when I was driving on the highway at 70mph the right front let go and the tread came completely off except for a small section. As I was driving the tread continued to beat the hell out of my car until it came to a stop - $4300 worth of damage to my 89 Mustang that was fully covered by Falken. I havent bought a Falken or Michelin since...

I can relate to that tire damage. Tore up a rear tire/wheelwell/ 1/4 panel once

Defects generally occur less than 1% of the time, I'm pretty sure its a runflat that got to hot and disintegrated.
