Sumitomo Tire disintegrating on the Freeway

Here's what happened to me yesterday going 60 miles per hour on the freeway...

Anybody heard of problems like this before?

Was the tire properly inflated? That happened on my van once when my daughter had it, the tire pressure was low and the heat build up on the highway caused it to shred like that.

You are lucky..... Better be glad you weren't going any faster. I had a set of those tires on my 05 and they were horrible tires. Kept going flat all the time.... Go Nitto 555.

does kinda look like a overheat failure from high speed at low pressure...any chance coulda hit something that cut the sidewall- any sudden blowout at hiway speed will shred a tire pretty darn quick

Your lucky to still be with us. I'm glad no one was hurt. The tire company that sold those tires should stand by their product and replace the rim as well.

Which tire did you have? On Tirerack.com all of their tires are middle of the range in the ratings.I'll stick with the BFG's for my road tires. You were lucky that wasn't on the front could have been a lot worse. If you cant find a puncture or cut that caused the blowout I'd rethink keeping those tires.

I've never seen a tire fail like that, assuming it was properly inflated and didn't receive excessive contact from a foreign object.

what size was/is the tire and how wide are the rims? I have a had a blow out or two and its not as bad as everyone thinks. Its not like your car starts spinning in circles when it blows

Yes, expandable pressures can cause excess hyper velocity. Therefore, unidentifiable objects can spontaneously combust in the tires outer wall membrane giving you a catastrophic event such as yours...gotta watch out for that stuff

Maybe under inflated but what about workmanship and material.I remember Firestone getting to trouble for tires blowing up.I had a tire go like that and Goodyear stood by their product with a replacement.
