According to the Motor Trend I just received, plans for annual releases of special edition models like the Bullitt were axed by former product chief Phil Martens. This was apparently due to the belt-tightening at Ford due to market share losses. According to the blurb, the only surviving specialty model is a Boss, that will get the same 5.4L engine as the Shelby GT500, but without the supercharger.

I searched and didn't see this posted anywhere else. This is the first I had read of this. I was thinking specialty models were on the way.

I'll be happy with a Boss. Especially that 5.4 N/A engine.

I heard about this last night and it put me in a really bad mood. I was really looking forward to a mach 1 or a boss, but now they it looks liek only a boss and who knows how limited thats going to be. There is no way I can compete with die hard collectors/people willing to pay alot over msrp, ect. I guess things can change ina few years so i'll just have to wait and see.

If they do a BOSS model, what kind of price tag would that put the Mustang into?

Mid thirties would be too much. The only major thing that would probably cost them more would be the 5.4 liter. I'm guessing only a couple thou over MSRP. so my guess would be low 30s...not higher.

It's THE best news for Saleen, Roush, Shinoda, Steeda, Hyland
and anybody else that wants to make and sell specialty Mustangs.
It's great news right up until Ford declares bankruptcy.

I better go and stock up on Mustangs now.

works for me, so long as it has higher compression than the cobra, and 3valve VVT I'll get my checkbook out

Sound's like it will have the 4V heads.
The question is, "Will Ford ever put VVT on the 4V heads?"

With the '09 Mustang update slipping to '10, I bet we get one more SE in 09 to keep interest in the old Stang while anticipation builds on the '10 update.

Also, I wonder what happened to bringing back the 4.6 4V, IIRC Stang05KC posted service parts info. that showed the 4.6 4V being used in the Mustang for 08. This raises the question as to whether the "Boss" will get the 5.4 or 4.6.

Maybe the 4.6 4v was going to be used in the Mach 1 that Roush was working on with Ford

I saw this last night also. Not good news. And then they wonder why they are losing market share. Here is a product that will sell and people want yet they will not build them. Might only be 10,000 or so each year but 10,000 sales are better than someone jumping to another brand. And that will happen if they do nothing with the Challenger and Camaro coming down the pipe.

Not that this a major issue, but in order to sell the 10,000 a year you give up production of V6 and GT models and those are your bread a butter models. That is due to the fact they are already building as many as they can. I wish they could just up the production. I have hope and it may only be hope that Ford will build some other sepcial models of the Mustang and this is more rumor than fact.

It is in the April 2006 Motor Trend. It's on page 14, in the MT Confidential column.
