Maybe these tires need a little less air pressure?

You might be right, but if he's getting even treadwear across the face (looked to be), then pressures should be pretty close. I still think it's just due to the super soft compound, and the heavy nature of our S197s.

These same tires probably last 3 times as long on a Miata.

I lowered the pressures a bit for the autocross yesterday and they gripped better. 34 front 31 rear worked best for me. Most everyone at the track said not to worry about it. It's probably just that the wide center grooves are exposing the edges and the soft compound is rounding off at the edge.

I just noticed this today. I don't know if it happen on the street or at an autocross so I don't know if it's chunking due to heat. There aren't any other spots like this on any other tires and this is the only spot on this tire. Does everyone think the tire is ok to keep running on???

That's nothing. You should have seen my Nitto Invo tires after 1 hr 35 minutes on a 2 1/4 mile road course on a hot day. You have nothing to worry about. You might have been sliding and gone over a small rock, the tire is fine.

I agree, the chunking and edge degradation on my GT500 take off Goodyear Supercar tires is amazing. And the amount of rubber marble pick up I have is nuts, acts like a sweeper for those behind me!
