I went to fill the car up yesterday, full service. I go inside to pay and they guy pumped $51 in it (remember, I am in Canada). So I pay, get in and drive off. A little way down the road, I reset my trip odometer, fuel milage, etc. I then notice the fuel gauge is half full and the message center says 150kms til empty. So, I figured I payed for the wrong pump. I went back and talked to the guy and he said he made sure it was full, so I go back and start the car and double check, now it reads full.

Seems like the fuel level sending unit might have been stuck or something. I have not read anyone else having this problem, am I the first?

Everything has worked fine since, hopefully it won't come back.

I remember the night I picked up my car (dealer filled the tank as I was signing the paperwork) the message center read something like 350 miles to empty, but when I filled up for the first time at 170 miles and reset everything (MPG,Trip Set) I noticed that the miles to empty reading is was under 200 miles and it's stayed that way every time I fill up.

As to the gauge not reading full when you left the station...did you turn off your ignition key when they were filling the tank?
The reason I ask is that I've noticed the fuel gauge in the ambulance I drive at work doesn't show full until the iginition has been turned off then back on...and then it shows full.

, very interesting, my girlfriends car is doing the same thing. Sometimes the little "sponge" type of ball gets soaked and sinks therefore the reading is lower than actual gas in the tank. I don't think that would be the problem with a new car though.

I also had fuel gauge problem, sitting in parking lot went from full to empty and back to full again. The engine was running at the time,so I shut it off and refired it,check engine light was on and distance to empty had an error message. I took it the dealer he said it needed a new sensor and also a new gas tank. It is hard to fill at certain pumps

I have never had a problem with filling the tank (nozzle shutting off). The car has never done it before, I picked it up Dec 15 and it now has 5900kms.

My fuel gauge just started acting up yesterday. Went to work this morning and talked to a tech who said there is a wiring harness that is to blame. I had just ordered one for another mustang yesterday with the same problem.

I believe the part number is 5R3Z-14407-BA(on backorder of course). Ford is not aware of this problem, but my tech checked the tech-to-tech message board on fmcdealer and found the fix(we hope). This problem seems to be growing according to that board.

Also ordered all the parts for the noisy stut mounts. Yeah there all on backorder too. :notnice:

I haven't had this problem myself, but I spoke with a guy the other day at the "Gallop Around the Bay" here in Northern CA that has. He said he had to have both sending units replaced due to faulty gauge readings. There are apparently TWO sending units on the '05s as they have a "saddlebag" fuel tank.

I have had this problem on a couple diffrent occasions after filling up, after the first time i filled it up it happened so i thought maybe the key and ignition had to be shut off but that didnt fix the problem so i went on as normal and when i got back in the car later it was fine, this has happened 2 other times the same thing, but the other times it has been fine.

I think the wiring harness that we have ordered is coming off the two senders. Hopefully this will fix the problem.

Got the wiring harness. Didn't fix the problem. :bang: Ford's tech line says to try pump and sender assembly. Will be ordering tomorrow morning. Mine only acts up at about 3/4 tank.

What is your average miles per gallon?

My mile to empty usually says ~ 300 Miles with an average MPG of 20.

If your average MPG is ~13 that may be why it says only 200 miles till empty.

Last friday, when I was on my way home, I was at a full tank, my message center beeped, it showed no fuel + an error code. I turned the car off, and turned the car back on, everyhting returned to normal. Went to work on monday, it did the same thing, except this time the check engine light stays on. I took it to my dealer, and it turned out to be both fuel senders, part #'s 4R3Z-9275-AA + 4R3Z-9275-DA. They will be on back order till 06-30-05. My senders fail at least once per trip.
I hope this helps.

Had fuel pump and sender assembly replaced. Seems to have fixed the problem. The pump wasn't too hard to get, two days on emergency order. The dealers may be replacing both senders to cover their backside. Of course mine may start acting up again next week.

Quick Reply: New problem for the 05 ?
