I picked up my 06 GT in mid november. Monday, my sister decided to buy a new 05 V6 off a dealers lot. SoI was looking at it and decided to take it for a drive. I immediately noticed our keys were very similar. Well, it turns out they were the same cut. I can unlock her car, and she can unlock mine. Neither of us can start the others car as expected, but we could get into the cabin.

I was wondering if anyone knew how many different key cuts are made, and what the is odds of us having the same cut. Has anyone else had this happen to them. Its a bit unnerving knowing my key isnt THAT uncommon.

I used to own an 82 Cutlass and had to get a new trunk lock put in (long story, don't ask ). They keyed the new lock to work with my keys and the dealer told me that there was only like 20 or so combinations of keys for that platform (Buick Regal, Olds Cutlass, Monte Carlo, etc.) for that era. Pretty scary indeed, but like you said, at least it can't be started.
