Hooked Up With A Cobra, Fun
#61
Excuse me--where is this you are driving 110mph?? I really don't care how much experience you have as a driver, you have no business going that fast on public roads. I'm sure its tons of fun until you lose control, smash into some minivan and wipe out a family. You have a lot of nerve, being so irresponsible, and then starting a thread to brag about it.

The mags said the 03/04 Cobras were second only to the 2000 Cobra R and the 05 comes in a close third, so I really dont think the gap between the 03/04 Cobra and the 05 is as far as you may want to think. If you can get a good supercharger with and additional 100 HP for the 05 GT going by the dyno testing you are looking at a car with over 400 horsepower just like the Cobra with a better platform. I am not knocking the Cobras but technology has improved with our new pony and someone will be building a 05 GT that will be taking out a few Cobras.

Now that being said the 05 is head and shoulders above the Cobra in quality and I would love to have the rear end setup instead of the POS IRS. With that setup 05 drivers could be able to get Cobra like 1/4 mile times because of traction, but they will never have the mph. [/b][/quote]
I said take out a few Cobras not all of them, if you got enough money to keep modding your car more each time someone comes out faster good for you however it is possible to get the 05 even with the stock 03/04 Cobras without braking the bank.

For those still missing his point, I think Pony has already agreed that a stock cobra will dust a 05 GT in a straightline. I dont ~think~ hes necessarily even saying for certain that a stock 05 will beat a 03 cobra through the turns.
What I think he is saying is that the 05 is a superb platform to the cobra for the money that it is, and for 'just' being a GT. And that with some modding it will beat a stock cobra (which is impressive and somthing to be proud of). He could be entirely right since the GT mods are a variable and nothing that we know for sure yet.
On the other hand, remember no one said 'the new GT will beat the new Cobra'. Right now its sort of apples to oranges bc there is no new body style cobra out yet for 05. And when there is, .. well thats a whole new GT vs. Cobra thread. So this is sort of a "if I mod my GT it will beat an X years old Cobra." Thats just owner pride to me, and whats wrong with that? Obviously hes a good driver and was just posting a fun 'hey i hung with an 03 for whatever reason' post.
Just my $.02 since this thread has sort of seemed to go downhill.

I know exactly where my car is on the road & what it is doing at all times.
I guess you prefer people who block the left lane at 55, those who change lanes without blinking, people who talk on their cell phones & eat burgers, the ladies who are putting on their makeup, others who read books or newspapers, etc., etc.

PS It was 110 out of the left & 120 up the long straight hill.

You are one of the few people that I have met that actually like the IRS. It just doesn't make sense on this car. It is a bolt in kit put in a vehicle that was not designed to have IRS. It is heavier, not as strong and the gains from it don't outweigh the negatives. If it was that great we wouldn't be talking about how a car with a live axle and 235 all season tires can hang with a car with IRS and 275 summer tires. It should have been an option for those who really want it. Now if they could build an IRS that wouldn't wheel hop or break half shafts I would be sold. The fact of the matter is most Cobra drivers are drag racers and not road race guys.

I still laugh out loud when I see someone call the IRS on the Cobras a POS. The COBRA was NOT built specifically to be a 1/4'er. Have you ever taken you car onto a ORC? If you did, I bet you wouldn't call your IRS a POS.

The IRS is on the car because SVT engineers did not see the Cobra as a drag racer per se, they saw it as a track contender for the Vette. And on a road course, IRS will outperform a solid/live axle the vast majority of the time.
That is why it had the IRS - for better handling and ride, not for the drag strip. And, as someone said earlier, the Cobra is NOT a quarter-miler specific car. For what it was designed and put into the car for, it does a good job. It just isn't drag strip 'friendly' like a solid rear axle.
But it IS an awesome machine. My son's '03 Cobra - with just a chip, pulley, exhaust and cold air - dyno'd 440 Rear Wheel HP and 460 Rear Wheel Torque. That's nearly 520 Flywheel hp - out of a 4.6 liter rated at 390 hp.
Wow!
