Miles per fill up means nothing.

How does that prove anything let alone consistent good gas mileage?

Miles per fill up means nothing. What is a fill up, 5 gallons or 15 gallons? how full is your tank after you "fill" it?

The only way to truly know what your fuel mileage is is to calculate the miles driven divided by the gallons of gas consumed, period.

People say that they get great mileage, but this is the only way to prove consistent good gas mileage.

I saw 417 once this spring on mine. I had been putting around and going back and forth to work only. Lots of coasting up to stop lights and such

I think this number is a calculation of the average MPG recorded by the onboard computer during the last 30 gallons of gas consumed. Its stored in memory and it isn't reset every time the reset button is pushed by the operator. Times 16 (gallons it knows are in the tank) and reads out when the tank registers full as "miles to empty".

I ran out of gas once to see what was left after reading "zero miles to empty" and used .6 or .7 gallons (can't remember which) before it sputtered to a stop.

The tank holds 16 gallons (if you can get it to fill up, but that is another thread all together), so 407 miles would be 25.4 mpg. This would be easy to attain on a road trip. I have heard of guys getting 30 even on road trips but you would not have to be in a huge hurry and really feather the throttle without the cruise control. But what fun would that be I guess this is why I didn't buy a Prius.

Anywhere here test how much further you can go after it says you are on 0 miles left?
I just merged onto the turnpike and noticed I was at 2 miles to E! Luckily there was a rest stop about 5 miles away. There was at least a gallon and a half left in the tank. They prob build that buffer on purpose so idiots like me don't get stranded.

I remember reading that the miles to E is based on the last 500 miles average.

So I guess modding my car, beating the **** out of it at the track and racing anyone who wants to on the street doesn't make me a real Mustang driver because I happen to also get good gas mileage?

I actually ran out of gas once, about 10-15 miles past "0 miles until empty." A nice guy in a pickup stopped and offered me a gallon of gas that he happened to have - and said he had an '05 Mustang himself. I drove immediately to the gas station and filled up with about 14.2 gallons if I remember correctly. (So that's 14.2 gallons + 1 gallon from that guy = 15.2 gallons)

And I was REALLY empty. My car was dying on the interstate, and I would hit the ignition in neutral to restart it while coasting, and it would run for about 10 secs before dying agian. This happened about 4-5 times before it died completely shortly off the off-ramp.

I think the 16 gallon tank means it holds 16 gallons, but I don't think it's possible to actually use the last gallon. So if you drove until you were on fumes and had your engine sputter to a stop right at the gas pump, you'd need to drive at about 27mpg in order to get 407 miles out of one tank. I can do 27mpg on the highway if I reset the meter while driving - and that's "cheating", but considering you get about 8mpg on a good day while accellerating from a stop, I think that would be pretty hard to do (try resetting your mpg meter at a red light and then look at your mpg while you accellerate from 0-40mph.. my usual driving gets me 4-5mpg.)

Looking at your figures guys, I feel that mine is so low , see the photo below (taken yesterday just after a tank fill):

I think the reason is that my driving is mainly in city, we have a huge roush and roads are always full of cars and using AC all the times in here (weather is so hot and humid)..

Some times I get sad for the Mustang and take it for long drives on major highways to have the engine breath a little..

The good point is that the gas price here is $0.83 per gallon.. you do not always get what you want!!!

Note: our measuring unit is km to emty (metric system) but I changes the readings to English just before taking the photo to be consistant with what you guys have shown

Well heck. If you can do all that and get great mileage I'd love to know the secret!

If you want to see a huge number, just disconnect the battery and reconnect when you fill it and you will get the default setting which is probably based on 32MPG, the highway rating. I had to reset a code on mine right after I filled it (leve near the station) and when I reconnected the battery the mileage to empty was huge.
