GIVING COPS A BAD NAME!

So my weekend was going AWESOME! Hot Rods and Hot Cars in Ocean City was freaking killer! There were some many gorgeous automobiles down there I cannot begin to list them all and like a dummy, I didn't have my camera. I raced and burned out and raced some more and had a blast. I stayed till Monday due to work and left this afternoon around 3pm. On my way back from 50 I stop at the red light and a marked MD state trooper pulls up next to me.
The light turns green, and I accelerate, shift to fifth and put my cruise control on 60mph. (in a 55)
The cop pulls behind me, turns his lights on and pulls me over.
I am already pissed because he had no reason to pull me over so at this point I am in disbelief.
He comes up to my window and is a total jerk demanding my license and registration while I ask why he was pulling me over.
He says that I shot off the line to get past him and was going 63mph and speeding.
Umm, no I was going 60mph and I only accelerated to get to 60, I didn't peel out or anything.
He goes back to his car, sits there for 35 minutes and writes me 3 tickets.
63mph in a 55. $65
Too dark of tint even though he had no tool to verify this. $55
And a work order to have the tint removed.
I am flabergasted, I have no idea what to say. He even checked to see if I had a front license plate to see if he could ticket me for that!!!
Needless to say, HE is the exact reason why cops get a bad rap. Arrogant jerks, who get some type of authority and even when they are off-duty, which he was, he was in a NY Giants jersey, feel they can take out their aggression on you. Officer XXX, I wish the worst upon you.
Personal info should not be posted, regardless how mad you are.
Take it up with a court, if you feel wrongly accussed.

isn't that just as unsafe as me speeding around town? There is no warning to other drivers, with the speed that some of these cars are traveling, you can't always pick up that its a cop, or even see them coming for that matter. I thought that was the whole reason for the sirens and lights, so that the safety of others isn't compromised
it makes sense to me that if a cop needs to get somewhere quickly, requiring him/her to speed to get there, then they should have lights/siren on, if its important enough to go that fast, what's the reasoning for not requiring sirens/lights?
and, I have seen on many occassions, cops running lights and rolling through stop signs w/ no lights or sirens

Fight the machine
hahahhah
Thats funny,
Bottom line,
You knew you were speeding, you didn't think you'd get nailed for doing 5 over, but you did, and now you're bitter.
We'd all be.
And of course, he started picking....he knew you'd be steamed, so he
probably took it for what its worth.
Fight it if you can, it may help..but if not...
Man up, tough crap....
hahahhah

Says who? They can follow you ten cars back for miles, unseen, then pull you over for whatever speed they paced you as going and it will hold up in court. Even in Maryland (Baltimore is my home town)
Had a case here that I read in the paper where an individule was ticketed for his tint being too dark and was ordered to remove it. He took the tint shop to court to get a refund because they didn't tell him the tint was too dark for his side windows.

I should have said pacing doesn't hold up if you know how to ask the right questions which most of us don't. Heck even some types of radar can be defeated with the right line of questioning. I respect police officers and what they do because I know so many of them personally. In Bobs situation it might have been the pot calling the kettle black and thats probably what has him pissy.
Your point is very valid Marc, I'm simply trying to explain why it is that you may see what you see happening. I'm sure that each department has it's own policies and procedures regarding such issues. I must also point out however, that officers complete a very extension defensive driving course. They are always looking out for traffic!
I actually had quite the opposite experience with a cop here in Arizona (Chandler to be exact). The week after I got my Stang GT (back in November) I was at a stoplight next to one. I looked over at him, and he was admiring the car. I heard him yell something, so I rolled down the window. He told me to "spin them". WHAT?!?! I thought to myself, but, the law is the law, and I did what Johnny Law told me to do! ha ha. I looked in the rearview, and he didn't even move at the light, and I saw a thumbs up (he looked really small though).
To the person that posted about Montana's speed limit, I was told by MHP that to a certain point there is no limit, but they will start pulling people over at around 88 MPH to either ticket or warn about driving at high speeds. And at night, there are speed limits in certain areas, especially in wooded areas, because it makes sense. I'd rather have .58 seconds to react to an elk in the road, than .23 seconds. The law of averages may work to my advantage in that situation.
And last but not least, there are certain cops out there that don't give a rats **** about pulling people over for speeding. These guys are normally in different departments (such as homicide, forensics or even school resource officers). The last thing on their mind is if someone is going 5 miles over the speed limit. BUT there are traffic cops specifically set out to do TRAFFIC duty. So to say they can be out busting people for REAL crimes, is not really fair.
Besides, I think that to every cop, every day is a bad day. I know that in the Phoenix metro area, they are constantly recruiting cops because they're shorthanded. They have to put in longer hours to cover shifts. I've heard of classes of 60, with only about 5-8 becoming cops out of that number. I know I was in a constant bad mood with my old job because I had to cover for 4 people due to 'budget cutting' practices. Totally unacceptable.

You weren't driving safely, if you were speeding.
I would like to include my two pennies here...
My dad was a cop for 20 years...most of which in traffic, as a motor cop. Here in CA, these are the most feared and hated cops; because all they do is write people tickets. And most of the time...motorcops hide with their bikes arround signs, bushes, walls, etc. to try and catch people breaking the law.
I have been pulled over about 12 times, and received 6 tickets. 3 of them I got off because my dad was a cop, and the officer knew I was a cope's kid...and gave me a break. I have appreciated every one of these moments.
Of my 6 tickets...I have received 2 that were completely BS, BUT still deserved as I WAS IN FACT breaking the law. One ticket was for not using my turn signal when changing lanes and the other for doing 80mph in the slow lane...while people were passing me.
I find it funny that some of you say that cops should be enforcing REAL crimes...like robberies and rapes. If that's the case, why don't we just get rid of traffic laws all together. In fact, let's take it a step farther. Let's abolish all laws that do not harm someone else. Do you see how asinine this train of logic is?
I have come accross very nice cops (even the ones who wrote me) and mean ones (even the ones who let me go). The fact still remains-
What would you do in their position? It is their job to enforce the law...whether they are just or not. Yes, pulling someone over for 5mph is retarded on the surface. But ask yourself this.
What would have happened...if by some freak chance....the officer saw you speeding, but decided not to pull you over...basically he looked the other way. (yes, 5mph over is speeding). Now, your tire blows out (that does happen!). And when your tire blows, you lose control of your vehicle and kill an innocent bystander. Now, that cop let you break the law...and as a result, a life was lost. And he is responsible.
Yes, this might be far fetched....but when dealing with a human life...nothing should be too far fetched.
Laws are there to protect people. There is a speed LIMIT...which means the maximum speed you should drive if conditions permit. You are lucky that cop didn't really slam you, because all he has to do is say that traffic and/or weather conditions didn't permit you driving 55, let alone 60.
My dad came home from work every day...for 20 years...knowing that he helped save lifes, but also knowing that people hate him...and some want to kill him. There are politicians and acitivists who speak out against "wide spread police brutality". there are music artists like Ice Cube who write songs with lyrics like "f^%$ the police, kill the mother f*&^%(*& pigs". Yet, every day...my dad would start his day at 5am to protect and serve. Even while people tell him he is doing is job wrong.
I bet police officers don't come in to your work drizztbob, and get mad at you when you always ask them "do you want fries with that?". They don't tell you how to do your job...so why do you say how they should do theirs?
Yes, there are mean cops who have attitudes. Wouldn't you have an attitude if everywhere you looked and listened, you heard people speaking out against you?
So to the cops that are nice...I applaud them. To the ones who are "mean", I thank them for doing there job and give them the benefit of the doubt; and show them respect...because they have a tough job. This cop did nothing wrong. You have illegal tint and you sped, right in front of him. Talk about poking a lion with a stick.
ok..end of rant.

5 miles over is retarded, that cops is an donkey doughnut. I don't care if limit was 55, pulling someone over for 5 miles over is being seriously ****. The proof that he was being an donkey doughnut is he went ahead and decided to ticket you for every other litlte nit-picky thing he could. I don't see why people are trying to defend a cop for acting like this. If you were in the same situation you all would be over the opion that the cop was an hiney.

Here is MD Speeding law straight from the source
· Drivers may not operate a vehicle in excess of lawful limits [TR §21-801.1]
· Maximum speed limit on most highways in the State of Maryland is 55 miles per hour. On specially designated highways, the maximum speed limit is 65. [TR 21-801(e)(2)]
· Maximum speed limit for streets, divided highways, business districts, and residential districts is defined by statute [TR 21-801.1(B)]
· Drivers prohibited from willfully operating at a slow speed as to impede normal movement of traffic [TR 21-804(a)]
· Many violations of speed limit are treated as a misdemeanor [TR 27-101]
· Currently, fines for most violations of speed range between $60 to $520, though can be higher based on severity of violation [TR 27-101(B)]
· Fines for excessive speed in a school zone are doubled [TR 21-803.1(d)]
· Citations issued to residents, generally, carry points assessment against driving record
[TR 16-402]
· Citations issued to non-residents may be assessed against home state driving record. (Maryland is a member of the Driver License Compact) [TR 16-703]
· Maryland State Police use various methods to detect speed violations including
[Art. 88B §3]:
o RADAR (radio detection and ranging)
o VASCAR (visual average speed computer and recorder)
o LASER (light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation)
o ASEP (aerial speed enforcement)
o PACING (Certified calibrated speedometer used to match speed of violators vehicle)
· Enforcing agency need only demonstrate proper maintenance of equipment and competent operator to validate violation [CJP 10-301 & 10-304]
Now what you'll notice is pacing is an accepted form. (My bad I didn't think it flew because of how inaccurate it can be) However right under that he agent need only to show proper maintenance. That is where a good lawyer can dig into them and cause a screw up.
When a cop is around I always respect their presence. Hence I hope this never has to apply to me again.

"I pull up to a light in my illegally modified car. Cop pulls up next to me. Light changes and I pull away, exceding the speed limit as I do so. I do not slow down, but set cruise-control to the over-the-limit speed I have just reached. I get pulled over and am ticketed for both offenses. Why did this happen to me?"
The facts above are based upon your own admission (speed) and an earlier comment re the tint % you posted on another website.
Sorry, but it is what it is, man.

Sorry Kristi, I didn't mean to come off as disagreeing with what you were saying. It is just an observation I've made and its always made me say "hummm????". Actually a co-worker of mine had a relative (nephew I think) killed by a cop speeding w/out lights/sirens on here in Cincinnati. Now, I think that cop was heading somewhere or chasing someone, but it goes to show the danger of speeding w/out lights/sirens. Its just as dangerous as others doing it.

I didn't think you were disagreeing. You have an excellent point. It is unfortunate that innocent people sometimes get caught in the middle of stuff!
In Ontario, if I can remember correctly....
15 over the limit will net JUST a fine
16 and over will net you a fine and points on your license.
Most people do 15-20 over, and do not get stopped.
In a 50, people do 60 (kilometers)
In an 80, people do 100
In a 100, people do 120
Some highways are like speedways where going 140km is not uncommon (with the flow of traffic)
No grey area....
You are either speeding or not....
Whether you feel that theres a grey area....its not.
Its a cop being nice to you as opposed to one that can give you a nice fine if he choses to do so.

On the highway/interstate I either go 5 over or with traffic if it's < 10 over (i.e. I won't go 11 over the posted limit even if traffic is). In town I will at least do the limit and try to stick close to that as traffic permits.
If I see a cop (actually more sherrif's here) I check my speed, and if i'm not going more than 5 over I keep it where it's at.
I've passed many patrol cars going from 1 to 5 over and never gotten pulled over. If I ever do I'll be as polite as possible and as helpful as I can.
BTW, the officer is just suggesting that you get fined, the county/city attorney is actually the one filing charges against you.
At least that's my understanding of it as my wife's explained it to me. She works in the County Courthouse. Oh, that's also why i'm not worried about frivolous (sp) tickets

Ok, not to beat a dead horse but some people here are getting facts screwed up even though it's right in front of them. He didn't get written up for doing 5mph over the limit, he got ticketed for doing 8mph over the limit (63 in a 55). And on another note drizztbob, it's a good thing you didn't get caught doing burnouts and racing in Ocean City because an 8mph over ticket would seem like childs play. I say you got off easy.
I tought this was a forum to discuss the 2005 Mustang. Instead this thread has turned it into a forum where some of you bash cops. Funny, I've never had a problem with cops in all my years of driving. I'll bet that the ones who are bashing cops would not hesitate to call one if there life was put in some kind of danger. Lets get back to talking about what we all love, the Mustang and try and be thankful that the cops are there when you do need them.

Hope it didnt hurt when you feel off your soapbox...once again you are comparing laws and degrees of breaking the law. ONCE AGAIN speeding 4-5 MPH over the speed limit and 10-15 MPH over the speed limit is different, YOU CANNOT DENY THAT. Cops and citizens alike can agree, this is a valid difference. We can sit here and split hairs saying breaking the law is breaking the law, but in everyday life, there is a thing called a "GRAY AREA". Every hear of that? It's the area that exists where the lines of right and wrong can be blurred together. YOU may live in a perfectly black and white world where everything is either right or wrong, but I am less naive than that...

actually, I didn't get up on the soap box. But if you really want me to...I will.
There is no gray area when it comes to enforcement of laws. The last time I checked...the law doesn't say-
"a vehicle may not travel over a posted speed limit, unless said vehicle is a mustang...or does so carefully...or its a tuesday...". It's very black and white. You can drive a maximum of 55mph. I guess the only gray area would be the "if conditions permit clause", but this doesn't apply...as he was traveling 8mph over the posted MAXIMUM speed limit.
You are severely mistaken to believe there is gray area when it comes to the enforcing the law. Interpreting the law...yes, there is gray area. that is why we have lawyers.
Maybe you live your life with blurred lines of right and wrong. But government runs it by following laws and rules. These can be changed, and even excused...but never "blurred". Those signs you see that say "speed limit 55" are not suggestions.
He broke the law, right in front of a police officer. the law is the law. black and white. If a police officer DOESN'T pull you over for going 1mph over, then you should be thankful.
And if you notice my signature...I lost my license for 30 days...for doing 104mph on the freeway. It was stupid, irresponsible, and I deserved it...and much worse!

Lets get back to talking about what we all love, the Mustang and try and be thankful that the cops are there when you do need them.
If this is one thread out of hundreds where we stray from the "mustang talk", that ain't so bad. He WAS driving a mustang though! I think it's been rather civil and if i were a mod here, i'd let it go.

I have been in that position. I didn't use my turn signal when changing lanes, and was pulled over and lectured for 10 min. My reaction?
"thank you sir"
It's called respect. And if it were my job to enforce the law...and someone right next to me/in front of me broke it on purpose (he saw his speed when he set his cruise control), I would pull them over to..and go over there car with a fine tooth comb. He was being disrespectful, and alot of other things that this forum will filter out.
