So my weekend was going AWESOME! Hot Rods and Hot Cars in Ocean City was freaking killer! There were some many gorgeous automobiles down there I cannot begin to list them all and like a dummy, I didn't have my camera. I raced and burned out and raced some more and had a blast. I stayed till Monday due to work and left this afternoon around 3pm. On my way back from 50 I stop at the red light and a marked MD state trooper pulls up next to me.
The light turns green, and I accelerate, shift to fifth and put my cruise control on 60mph. (in a 55)
The cop pulls behind me, turns his lights on and pulls me over.
I am already pissed because he had no reason to pull me over so at this point I am in disbelief.
He comes up to my window and is a total jerk demanding my license and registration while I ask why he was pulling me over.
He says that I shot off the line to get past him and was going 63mph and speeding.
Umm, no I was going 60mph and I only accelerated to get to 60, I didn't peel out or anything.
He goes back to his car, sits there for 35 minutes and writes me 3 tickets.
63mph in a 55. $65
Too dark of tint even though he had no tool to verify this. $55
And a work order to have the tint removed.
I am flabergasted, I have no idea what to say. He even checked to see if I had a front license plate to see if he could ticket me for that!!!
Needless to say, HE is the exact reason why cops get a bad rap. Arrogant jerks, who get some type of authority and even when they are off-duty, which he was, he was in a NY Giants jersey, feel they can take out their aggression on you. Officer XXX, I wish the worst upon you.

Personal info should not be posted, regardless how mad you are.
Take it up with a court, if you feel wrongly accussed.

Bob, what you committed was an offense called "contempt of cop" You broke the speed limit when you knew he was there. He took that as the equivalent of giving him the finger. So he decided to give you some payback. It may not be right, but remember cops are human too. They sometimes let their emotions get to them. You basically did this

I'd be mad too. That's a shame. Cop with an attitude, no surprise, unfortunately a lot let the power go to their head. There are good ones and bad ones, you got the latter. I'm all for taking punishment like a man, but I'd fight this one. I would think that a decent lawyer would get you out of most, if not all of this.

Thats crap because I didn't "jump off the line" I simply accelerated at a normal pace! There was even a car behind me doing the same thing! Why would I speed with a MARKED cop car next to me??? But I will tell you this: I have "contempt of cop" now.

did you break the law...
flat out yes...regardless of unwritten rules or courtesy....
5mph over, is 5mph over.

However, I do it, we all do, and it ticks us off when we get nailed for it.

I'd fight it, as if you know you were only doing x speed, and he has no proof (other than him pacing you...its his word against yours...and you can probably win)

No peel away, etc...thats a tough one too, as if there are no witnesses, its him against you.

And tint, well I mean...its his judgement. Is yours really illegal?
Cause if it isn't, then you can fight that one and win.

Sucks, but such is life

Well for starters, i can't say too much because i wasn't there, but i will say this. 99% of the time, people write their own tickets. You pushed the envelope by breaking the 55mph limit (no matter if it was only 5mph's) when he was right next to you. You basically challenged his authority in public and guess what? You lost. I can guarantee this had nothing to do with the car you were driving, it was all about your attitude driving it. Good luck with the tickets and remember, don't challenge authority.

According to Basic Speed Law:
If you are going under the max. speed limit of 65 mpr. and you can prove that it is a safe speed to be traveling at the time (No schools, dry pavement, no railroads, peds, etc.) levity is given.
This cop had such a bug up his hiney, he just wanted to be a *****.

I understand all that has been said about this and all I can say is if I see a cop anywhere near me and the speed limit is 55, I put the cruise on 50. I want to make sure that my speedometer and his do not get the chance to argue about it. Yes I drive over the limit and yes I have had tickets. Did id desirve them? well I guess I have to say yes. Did I like it,,,NO

A cop can give you a ticket for going 1 mile an hour over the speed limit if he wants to. It may be irritating that a cop pulls you over for doing only 5 mph over the limit, but it was very silly of you to break the speed limit when you knew there was a cop right behind you. You did it to yourself.

Ok, I'm confused. In your first post, you said you were going 60 in a 55. In your later post, you said the max speed limit was 65. Which is it? Makes a big difference if you're going to get pulled over or not, especially in a car that looks like it's going fast standing still!

First defense if you have tinted windows and get popped is to roll down all the windows. Also place both hands in view, that includes passengers. The cop is feared for his/her life. If you do this that lets them see into the vehicle and your intentions. The safer they feel, the less they will want to ticket you if there is a judgement call available to them.

Second, answer questions straight forward and do not have an additude.

I have been pulled over three times with tints and had not a thing said doing the above.

Good Luck.

Look, it doesn't really matter if you broke the law or not. Get yourself a lawyer and fight it. Chances are the jerk won't even show up to court. I've fought several tickets in court, and never lost. Take it to court.

Wow...I thought this was a mustang web site not the MD State Troopers Convention. Anyway, A fellow mustang owner and officer found that tidbit about basic speed law in his training manual for patrol officers in CA. The 65 MPH is the lenancy speed for a posted 55 MPH zone. And lastly, I did not give him any attitude until I drove away yelling "Yeah and the Giants stink!!!!"
