Ford Recalling 470,000 05+ Mustangs

I'm not going out of my way to have it done, but why would you not want Ford to do it? It does not mess with any aftermarket tunes, or anything else. If you are worried about having your dealer find out about aftermarket stuff that you don't want them to know about, take it to a different dealer. It's not like they enter your mods in a centralized computer system for all dealers to know about.
However, if this came up for my '07GT, and they griped about my CAI, I'd ask them how it is possible that an engine component could be aversely effecting the proper function of a safety feature.
On another note, I have to admit that airbags scare the crahp out of me. Not because of what they do (I've been through one of those kinds of accidents before) but rather they scare me because you don't know that they will work...until you get into a crash.
If my headlight fails, or my stereo burns out, or my blinker control stops working, it's no big deal. If something is wrong with my airbags and I get in an accident, I'm toast.
Oh well. Not much you can do about it, I guess...

Seatbelts are your primary protection.
I was injured in an accident partially because we hit more than ONE thing.
Air bags deflate after they inflate and become of little use or a hazard of their own.
If you are going at highway speeds you can hit several things very hard before coming to a stop.
When we went through the telephone pole (after the oncoming car sidewiped us ripping open the tires) the airbag deployed.
As we continued off-road down the hill at high speed, we crashed into an oak tree.
The airbag had partially deflated by then and I almost lost my eye to the rear view mirror (hanging from it's wire for all the fancy electricals in it) as it swung between the airbag and my face.

Agreed. In my accident with the car I had before my 'Stang, a guy ran a red light and plowed right into my side. Airbags deployed (including sides) but the force slung the car around backwards and across the median into the oncoming lanes. Fortunately no one was coming that way at the time, so a second impact was avoided.
Still, that the airbag deploys the first time is probably the big thing for most accidents, and in those accidents, if it hadn't, any secondary impact is irrelevant.
I think I heard from somewhere that some company was experimenting with airbags that deploy as they should, first, then stay inflated part-way to protect drivers from secondary impacts and also to keep them off the dash incase they're unconscious. Not sure what the pros and cons are of that, but there must be some major cons else I figure they would have implemented such a feature already.
Personally, I think they should install a feature that, after the accident, shows you a picture of your 'Stang and then says "This is OnKevorkian....Can I be of assistance?"
I totally agree about the seatbelts. I have no sympathy for anyone who gets hurt or killed because they weren't wearing a seatbelt. Putting on a seatbelt is so automatic for me, that I often find myself putting it on just to turn the car around in the driveway.

I think this is related. I just received a recall notice today for my 2007 GT.
Says that if a "small female" is sitting in the passenger seat ( ) and has the seat all the way forward with the seat tilted towards the front ( ) that if there's an accident ( ) the airbag could cause a neck injury....
Is this a recall for a problem? Or a notification of natural selection in progress?
Either way, I have to go see my dealer anyway, so I guess I'll boom down and have them reprogram the airbag.

I received the same letter for my '05 today. My car is still in storage, so when she comes out and I have the time, I'll take her in. I'm not making this a huge priority though. If you're not wearing your seatbelt, you get what you deserve.

I got the letter today, but I'm not going to have it fixed.
I don't see the point.
They might as well say they need to fix it in case Pamela Anderson's sitting in front, and her airbags would counteract the car's.
It's not going to ever happen, so I'm not wasting a part of my day for this.

Bad choice! Is the safety of your family worth a few minutes at the dealer?

This update only applies to a very small female, or a child, sitting with the seat pushed all the way forward, and not wearing a seatbelt. So as long as no small females or children sit in the front seat without a seat belt, and sit back a little bit from the dash, it is a non-issue. If you are worried about the safety of your family, make sure they are wearing a seat belt and this update won't matter.
