Finally going to buy some halos, but need some info

Hey guys,

I have been looking on ebay to get a pair of halo headlights. I checked AM but they only had smoked or all chrome headlights. I wanted a plain black housing with the halo light, so I turned to ebay.

My car...2006 v6 Mustang with GT grille and bumper.

My questions:

1.) How do you install them since I don't already have daytime running lights? Every ad suggested professional installation, but I am confident I can do this with some instruction.
I want them to come on when my fog lights do; which I use as DRL.

2.) Almost every ad said "may need modification if have an HID system". Well I have a conversion kit but it is a ballast and a HID bulb (retro-solutions). So what kind of "modifications" do you think I would have to make? I don't see what I can change. Has anyone needed to do this?

3.) I have ruled out the LED rings as they don't give a uniform light and I don't want a light looking like a circle of tiny lights. So I have opted to go with CCFL. But the ones I have found are either really bright or low or have a blue tint. My switchback turn signals run around 6000K so I would prefer the blue tint, but those tend to be less luminous. What are your experiences of how they look? Which look cheap?

4.) Lastly, some seem to not have a complete ring. Meaning, the light doesn't seem to be a full circle. Is this typical, an illusion, or and is it noticeable?

Below is a list of the one I am looking at on ebay if you want to view them.

Thanks guys in advance.

Keep in mind I have ZERO experience with halo lights, but I will give these opinions as my best guesses.

My guess is you would tap into the wiring for the front parking lights. Tapping the fog lights might be too high power for them to handle.

Judging from the fact that they poorly photochopped the lights into a pic of a Steeda Mustang (notice how the headlights aren't at the same viewing angle as the pic of the car they chose), I'm guessing they're not intimately familiar with the Mustang. I'm willing to be they have a whole bunch of auctions for a bunch of other makes and models and this is just a blanket CYA statement. As a stretch, they may mean factory HID systems. I see no reason this would work any different from your stock housing in regards to your actual headlight bulb. The only change is wiring up the halos to work.

Sorry, can't help there

Some definitely aren't full circles as I've seen, I think thats because of how the anode/cathodes are placed in the actual tube. CCFL stands for "Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp", and it is literally a florescent lamp. Some lamps have the terminals spaced farther apart. If you can't find one without that gap, then see if you can get one where the the gap is at the TOP. That way you won't always see it, depending on the angle you're looking at the car from. No matter what, you're always going to see the bottom half of the ring.

Take a look at what these guys are doing:

I like the look of the first couple links the best, since they follow shape of the reflector, flat spot in the top and all. The ones that are smaller that are full circles just look weird to me, like the car's on shrooms. That's just my taste though. But now that I look at them closer, they might be LED's at the 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions.

Whoa, those LED strips in the headlight housings are really cool looking. If I didn't have my switchbacks, which are white, I might have really considered doing this. Hell, I might consider it anyway. haha. Do you have any idea how they did that?

I'm sure they're just LED strips they mounted in the "gills". I think the headlight bucket is actually two or more pieces, the shiny black outer shell that has the gill cut outs, and the frame of headlight that everything else attaches to and bolts to the car. I'm guessing they just ran the wiring underneath the outer shell.

I wouldn't buy cheap halo If I were you. I did and they are awful they have 4 lights and a plastic circle that the lights reflect through to make the halo effect. Save your money and buy American muscles. That's what I ended up doing.

Oh, ebay is my second choice. American Muscle only has smoked lenses. I do not like that look. Its beyond me why they would only sell that kind. I asked the representative why they chose to do that and he didn't know either.

I would never go with eBay. I swear they had chrome back ones too. And have you looked at other mustang sites? Such asStangmods, and cjponyparts

You don't need daytime running lights. All you need to do is tap off the 12vdc + and - connections to your running light bulb in your marker lamp (not the turn signal bulb but the outer marker light) in your turn signal housing. I am assuming that you are running HID lights in your foglights?

Now when you tap into the wires, you'll need to cut a bit of the OEM wire loom/electrical tape to expose the wires. Use a volt meter to determine polarity of the wires (I can go look at mine if you wish and give you the wire colors). Now this part is important: Aftermarket headlight/foglight/any type of light kit give you very cheap cheap cheap wire taps that you just lay over an existing wire and then clamp closed with a pair of pliers. I highly recommend NOT doing this. Either get better wire taps from Home Depot or (my recommendation) solder the wires.

Added bonus of tapping into the marker lights: The halos will come on by themselves when your parking lights are on. Very cool effect!

You don't need to modify anything for the halo if you tap in to the marker lights.

Since you have an HID conversion kit there are no modifications necessary for the headlights, either. Just undo the capsules from the old lights and place them in your new ones.

I also prefer CCFL halo lights as opposed to the LED ones. The CCFL lights are more uniform. Good ones are built like a neon tube, the inlet is in the back so from the front you will only see a near perfect circle. (a piece is still missing however)

The light is on par with 6000k HID bulbs. However, when your HIDs are on, the brighter HID bulb will completely overshadow the halos and you won't see them, unfortunately. From about 5+ feet away you will only see a bright white uniform light without being able to distinguish the halo.

A CCFL isn't a complete circle. I am attaching a picture of what one looks like at night installed. I took this pic right after I installed a pair of Raxiom lights on a Dodge Ram this past December.

When you are wiring the lights with the CCFL you will have two more ballasts to mount. The wiring also tends to be really thin, like 14+ gauge wire. Many CCFL kits appear to be an "afterthought" so you will merely see a pigtail coming out of the light housing with a ballast crudely attached. For this reason I recommend soldering the wires to your 12vdc power source and if no quick disconnects to the CCFL ballasts are included then add your own. Get Molex connectors at your local Radio Shack if you go this route - you'll be a lot happier down the road if you need to replace a CCFL ballast or change out the light fixture.

Let me know if you have more questions - I can certainly help you.

Have a great day!
