If you just turned 16 or 17 and took a joyride in my future Mustang at a dealer I'd kill you. well, not literally, but don't take test drives just for the heck of it.
Why not? Bsides it's not YOUR future stang, it's the dealers car that he uses to get potentiall buyers to make their mind up and order a new car!!

If you then want to buy that specific car that's totally up to you.

I once went to a Lincoln/Mercury dealership to test drive the new Marauder when it came out. I think I was 19 at the time. The salesman gives me all the info, and I add to it. He didn't seem too impressed I had a passion for car knowledge. He gave me the key and stood in between me and closing the door. I started it, he smiled and told me to rev it. I did, afterwards he said "Ok, that's it." I asked if he was kidding. Without ever seeing any ID, he told me to bring my Dad back and he could drive it, and see how it fit in his garage. What the heck. I had told him I was interested in purchasing it, never even mentioned my Dad. I left and never went back, he called my house 3 times to see if I still wanted it. Yeah, right.

Heck - I am 37. Went to the local dealer and they have one GT up on a display rack outside. I asked about a drive and they said that they are not allowing drives - they don't want to put any miles on it.

I should have said that I will take the car - but I don't want to give any money for it...

It honked me off for a moment, but I am not planning getting one until next summer, so I let it go. I suppose they did not want to be bothered with getting it down from the rack either.

And you wonder why a salesman would be hesitant to give the keys to an 18 year old ????

I don't know about you guys but I would never purchase a car without test-driving it first. Doesn't have to be THAT car! Just one like it.

I went to the local dealership down here to look at the new stangs, had 4 v6's and a GT. I pulled up in my 2000, nice and clean, wearing nice clothes, and went over to look at the GT, salesman comes out, talks about the new mustang, asks some questions about mine, I mention that it's my 3rd mustang and I really like the new ones, we were standing by the v6 at that point, after thoroughly examining both, so I ask him how about a test drive and he asks how old I am. I say 19 and he says no can do, no test drives under 25 unless you're ready to sign the contract :bang: :bang: . I kind of looked at him like you're kidding right? And he says company policy, sorry and turns toward the building. I just said I guess I'll be taking my business to duncan ford (10 min down the road) and he turns around and says yeah, I guess you will. What an hiney! I can sort of understand where they're coming from but come on...it's not like I wanted to test drive a vette, it's just a V6 mustang. And it's obvious I'm likely to purchase another....guess I'm going to have to get my DAD to go with me to test drive a darn car.... :notnice:
You aren't by any chance in Blacksburg, are you?
Just curious how many the dealerships down there are getting...I'm currently in Fredericksburg right now, btw...I heard Purvis has a torch red V6, but I haven't seen it.

Go back to the dealership and ask to speak to the sales manager .... Make a lot of noise right on the sales floor where there are other customers. If they still don't let you drive it, tell them again that you were prepared to give them cash and because they were such donkey doughnuts, that you are going to the other dealer and give them your money.

BTW ...it shouldn't matter if it was a Vette or a V6 Mustang .... If they want to sell a car, they would let you drive it ...

Purvis Ford is some garbage. Unless you have bought tons of cars from them, don't plan on negotiating. I talked to this old guy. Red tie, silver hair slicked back. I was purchasing a Mach at the time. I gave him the story about going to the local dealers and the one that gave me the best deal would get my business. He said, "we will give you the best price here, I like to sell volumes of vehicles and don't get into haggling."

At this time I was excited until I told him to work me out a good deal...He did some typing on his computer, went to talk to the manager then came back with his "deal."

What he did made me want to smack him.. He wrote down the sticker price of the car and subtracted 3 grand and gave me a total. Not a bad deal if that wasnt the rebate the Ford was giving!! I showed him a business card from another dealer that was 2200 less and he said, well I guess you should go back to them.

I took his card out of my pocket and gave it back to him. Why don't car salesmen realize that most people are smarter than they are?

Purvis has always treated us nice, which is why we keep going back. Never had a problem with negotiations or anything, must have just been the salesman you had. Though we did almost bought an explorer from them last year, only to walk out and leave after being there for 2hrs because they wanted to give us HALF of blue-book value for my mom's lesabre.

VT05, yes I'm in blacksburg at VT right now. I was home last weekend and went by Purvis and the only one they had was a torch red 6 sitting on the showroom floor.

BTW, the dealership in question that I went to is SHELOR FORD in Chirstiansburg, VA.

I plan to test drive a GT when I take my 03 V6 for scheduled maintenance. stinks that I am in a new city and don't have a good relationship with a salesman. The guy that sold me my, and the wife's, mustang would let us drive off the lot without comming along, or asking for the keys to our cars. Good thing is I just turned 25.

Not sure about the US, but in Canada most dealers do not let you take it for a drive if you are under 25 due to insurance reasons. For example, I am not allowed to have any one under 25 drive my car for insurance reasons.

Yes, I know Shelor quite well...at least their Chevy dealership's service department...was treated horribly by them twice while I was down there in school, so I always swore I would never do business with them, just because of their service department. I think they saw a college-age girl walk in and tried to take advantage of that...
I used to hear good things about Duncan when I was down there. Knew some people who got great deals through them.
I've heard VERY mixed opinions of Purvis since I moved here.

I don't know about that one...

Dan is under 25 and has test driven every kind of Mustang you can think of.

I know some rental fleets will deny or add a surcharge if you are under 25

I'm guessing being that it's a new mustang in limited supply that they want to be carefull about these cars and keep the mileage low on the demo's for now .So most probably want a parant along which would show that there serious about buying a new car rather than being by yourself .....with them thinking your there by yourself for a joy ride in there car .Most dealers don't take anyone under 25 too seriously because they feel that you probably can't afford a new car working at Mc donalds :notnice:
Luckly there are some good dealers ,with good people skills that will take you seriously .....thats how I got my new car when I was 19 ....just a matter of finding the right salesman and getting a good price

im 17 gettin ready to buy a GT. they let me test drive it with no problem......the salesman was driving it with me in it and said your turn and i hopped in and drove it around. fun and powerful. some dealerships r just stuck up and if thats the case dont do business with them. there r some dealers that i still havent returned to because of the way they treated me

Wow, 19 and you are on your third Mustang! Are you getting a different one each year, or are you collecting them?
