Hey, first post!

I've been drooling over the new Stang for a while on the net, and I was driving by my local Ford dealer in my grungy Saturn wagon, and saw a beautiful Mineral Grey V6, so I popped in the lot to take a look see. I'm only 24 and was unshaven and wearing jeans and a sweater, and the salesman was all prepared to make a deal with me and get me out of my Saturn, even after I told him I plan on driving it until the wheels fall off! I probably could've convinced him to do a test drive, had I really felt like hearing a sales pitch! But, I can't afford a new car anyway! Either way, the V6 was fully loaded and the spinner wheels looked great! While the interior definitely reminds me of the original Stang, many of the materials reminded of my mom's '04 F150 FX4, which I think is a sharp looking truck.
On the other hand, when I wanted to test drive a GTO at the Pontiac dealer owned by the same people as my Saturn dealer, they said they'd let me drive anything but the GTO. To which I told him, "All your other cars are crap, why would I wanna drive them?", and walked away!

My advice, if you wanna be taken more seriously at a dealer, try to look like a "person who works for a living" and go in there acting like you know what you want and won't accept anything less. Its all about attitude. Also, knowing more and being able to out-yak a salesman is a plus!

I once went to a Lincoln/Mercury dealership to test drive the new Marauder when it came out. I think I was 19 at the time. The salesman gives me all the info, and I add to it. He didn't seem too impressed I had a passion for car knowledge. He gave me the key and stood in between me and closing the door. I started it, he smiled and told me to rev it. I did, afterwards he said "Ok, that's it." I asked if he was kidding. Without ever seeing any ID, he told me to bring my Dad back and he could drive it, and see how it fit in his garage. What the heck. I had told him I was interested in purchasing it, never even mentioned my Dad. I left and never went back, he called my house 3 times to see if I still wanted it. Yeah, right.
Recently I test droved 2001 Lincoln Navigator and I didn't had any problems.

I also went to see 2001 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 and dealer asked me if I wanted test drive. Didn't do it though. It was automatic and it was Chevy.

By the way, I'm 20.

I think it's completely ridiculous to deny a test drive because of age, you have no idea what kind of money some people have, nor do i think it should depend on how you dress, but i also understand on wanting to keep the mileage low on new cars i would not want to buy a "new" car with quite a few miles on it especially a mustang when you know that the likely hood of someone driving it like they stole it is a high possibility. my .02

When I bought my last Mustang, Igot talking to my dealer about this. I asked her if she gets alot of 16-17 year old kids coming up, looking for test drives of the Cobra and whatnot.

She told me that if someone that is teenager comes up for a test drive alone, they ask them if they are looking to purchase the car in the near future and if so, they run a credit check for them on the spot. You qualify, you get a test drive. If the teenager says that their parents are going to be financing, they ask them to come back with their parents, since they will be negotiating with them.

Personally, I don't see the problem with this. A test drive for a non serious buyer (or one that will not be making the financial decisions) can be a huge waste of time for the dealer/salesperson.

That being said, there is NO reason for a salesperson to be rude to anyone, no matter what their age is.

I mention that it's my 3rd mustang and I really like the new ones,

he asks how old I am. I say 19
Wow, 19 and you are on your third Mustang! Are you getting a different one each year, or are you collecting them? [/b][/quote]
The other two includes my 84 GT (sold) which I bought for 2000, sold for almost 3000, and the 83 5.0 that's currently dissasembled in my garage that I dragged out of a junkyard, so there's not really a lot of money tied up in those, or the v6 really for that matter....

I can understand the fact that they have insurance issues, liablity, waste of time, etc, but the guys whole attitude really irked me, just a complete jerk. He was super nice til I told him how old I was, then it was like "well nevermind then..." Really tempted to go back and talk to the General Manager but it's really not worth it. I'll just wait til I'm back home and go drive one.

Dan is under 25 and has test driven every kind of Mustang you can think of.

I know some rental fleets will deny or add a surcharge if you are under 25
I thought you were Dan, Dan.

lol, anyways....

I'm 20, I don't even have my license yet, still got the drive-with-your-parents permit going on until march. I would love to test drive a mustang, but first, i think i should probably get good at driving.
Once i do that, i figure i gotta not show up at the dealer on my bike, so maybe borrow my friend's eclipse or something. And then i figure i should let the guy know that i'm studying mechanical engineering, and that i'm earning money through internships and stuff. That would probably buy me some credibility on the ability to purchase front. Of course this is all a scam, cause i'm not gonna get one anyways, i just wanna get my mustang fix. i bet it all comes down to the dealer and how relaxed the guy you're dealing with is.
Driving regulations and insurance policies also vary from province to province, so i don't think you can generalize.

So some places will rent to under 25? Sweet, time for a road trip.

I also wanna test drive something with a CVT, that's gotta be a weird experience.

Cool

I kind of looked at him like you're kidding right? And he says company policy, sorry and turns toward the building. I just said I guess I'll be taking my business to duncan ford (10 min down the road) and he turns around and says yeah, I guess you will.
. HAHAHAHA im sorry, but we usually talk bad about dealers, but I just thought that his response was funny. I mean common, salesmen only have so much power over what they can do. Their human like us.

Back when I was 19, a salesman did that to me. I went down the street (Orange County, where dealers are a dime a dozen), made a deal for the same car, drove it back to the first dealer (all in about 40 minutes).

I called the manager and salesman out, they thought I was going to complain. But I just showed them my new car (and contract) that I bought at their competitor. I explained that they not only lost a sale, and my services, but they lost a customer for life, and in goodwill I was going to tell everyone I knew what a lousy experience I had with them.

OK. I was young and obnoxious; but I bet I gave them a heck of a lesson. Or not.

I remember being a 21-year old on vacation to western Texas. Stopped by a dealer specializing in vintage Corvettes, I was honest and said I couldn't afford some concourse winner (course at the time I couldn't afford anything) and asked to try a '64 convertible. He said sure. Snick, snick right through the gears.. till he asked me to take it easy. I said whats the matter (while thoroughly enjoying myself).

He pointed out we were doing 80 in a 40 zone, and still accellerating. You have to understand Texas streets are as wide as 3 lane highways where I am..

That was pretty nice. 300 hp 327, I wonder how much RWHP it was pulling.

I must say i have never had a problem with a test drive, the funny part is, everytime i go to take one, i am always seriously interested in the car. I think that any "story" you play out, if your not serious, the dealer knows.

heck i am 21 and got a drive in a bmw 745il (luckily i was with an older friend that wanted to take a ride in the back seat.)

it is really bad to go drive a car like you stole it when it is brand new, think: that is going to be someones car one day, and although your sticking it to the dealer, someone that could be the same kind of person as yourself might get stuck with the headaches.

I'm 18 and I've taken out numberous Mach 1's and Cobra's without a hassle, depends on the place and the salesman.

However I was told I couldn't test drive an 05 till next week, hopefully it's just because of the limited supply right now and not my age.

Places will rent to under 25's - I do it every week... Now, the real trick is to get around the under 25 fee. Now I have legitimate company links, but I haven't been asked for company ID yet... so pick your Fortune 500 company and go!

IMO a lot of the dealers right now are covetting the 05s like holy grails. yeah if your willing to buy it you should be able to drive it. heck if your thinking of buying it you should be able to see how it feels, but if your intention is that of the kid in the video, your just rude and destructive. Why hurt a vehicle that will be owned by someone one day? Now rental cars, thats what they, and the optional insurance is for.

Purely supply and demand right now.

ps. Im 27 with a 2004 mustang, and they told me it wasn't time to test drive either of the two they had on the lot yet, I said I understood and walked away. Now in a month or two, and im starting to become interested in buying one, and they tell me no on the test drive, its simple, I'll go somewhere else.
