When I travel by car to unfamiliar cities, I keep a digital compass in the console for quick reference.
Last week, I was driving to do an estimate with a worker in the stang and he kept giving directions based on the compass readings which quickly proved to be incorrect.

I found that the compass reads correct in my lap or in my hands in the driver's seat, but changes almost 90 degrees when placed in the passenger seat.

So if your spouse or friend usually help you out with navigation on a trip, make sure you spend a few moments checking out your compass in various locations where it might be used in the car.

I know you guys out there don't need directions but this may be important to others at some point.

I know this is going to shock some, but even in sunny (smoggy) California, the sun actually doesn't shine 24/7.

OK, now reel him in, reel him in

I've owned and operated boats for over 45 years and yes, I can navigate. But even in advanced navigation, you're taught to make sure your compass is calibrated properly. I know, I taught it.

Anyway, this wasn't supposed to be an earth-shattering topic, just thought some peeps might want to be aware there is some major interference up front in my GT,...........................................
that could cause you some probs., of course, at night, not listening to the echos and not looking at the stars/moon carefully prolly with your GPS turned off and of course, not following the specific directions your' customer is giving you over your cell phone...................well, consider yourself pretty well off as long as you took the proper foreign lanuuage in H.S.

Hmmm.... you do have the battery and fuse box over there. And maybe a passenger with a magnetic personality.

Myself, I usually use signs or memory to navigate. Although, when trying to get around in an unfamilier city (aka Detroit for NAIAS) I'll print up a little map of where I'm trying to get to.

Yes it's called diviation. Keep your compass away from farious metals.

Or you can get a flux gate compass and put the sender way up in the bow..I mean the front bumper.

When I was in the home improvement business I did over 15,000 in home estimates/inspections. Never needed anything more then a cheap map or a cell phone(or a pay phone for the first few years).

I find putting my GPS (Garmin Etrex for $60,not anything expensive) on the dash works flawlessly on any open highway and it doesn't care about magnetic fields.

You are getting electronic interference from inside the vechicle. Buy a compass that is shielded and made for an automobile and you won't have that problem.
