Cancel GT order and go for the GT500
I have a feeling the wait will be a little longer than you expect. Look at the difficulties people are having getting regular GTs these days. Now, factor in the low build number (comparitively) and the fact that current Cobra owners will get the first dibs, and initial price gouging by dealers and I expect it will be at least 1 year after its launch that a regular joe could get the Cobra for around $40k.
That's a long time to wait.
Why not get a GT to hold you over until then. If you aren't satisfied with the power, there are blower kits already. Want the looks? Chances are you could retro-fit much of the Cobra components onto the GT.
That way, you can enjoy it now.

If I'm not mistaken the GT 500 comes out next spring as a 2007, and not actually in 2007. Also, it will have 450 HP not 500...

Regardless, I, for one, am not in a position to spend an extra $10-$15K on a car. I'll just suffer on my "measly" 300HP.
I must admit, the thoughts of selling the GT and waiting for the GT500 crossed my mind...for about 30 seconds. I doubt that it would be available with the X-plan. I've decided to just be happy with what I have
Besides, if I need more HP in the future, that's what the Whipple is for!

I wouldn't woory too much about availability or production numbers. When they introduced the Mach 1 in 2003, the same statements about having to "wait in line" to get one were all over the place and ended up not being an issue.
Also, when introduced, Ford said they would only be making about 6500 of them. Not only did they eclipse that number in 2003, but they carried it over to the 2004 model year. I think, in the end, they ended up making about 15,000 Mach 1's. I suspect if the Shelby sales follow suit, the bean counters at Ford will keep production running.
As for me, I will cross that bridge when I get there. Yes, I will most likely put in my order and deposit on one, but drive the crap out of my '05 GT until then.
If your like me, you drive a Mustang because you like them, not because it's only what you can afford. Too many of my fellow executives at work look down their nose at me all the time for having a Mustang. I can't count the number of times I have been asked why I don't get a BMW, Lexus, Mercedes, etc.

I never realized mustang drivers made so much money???
This may have already been brought up but isn't there already a deal with anyone that leased an 04 cobra that they get the first chance at the next cobra? That would make it even harder to pick one up.

I can think of no better reason to drive one! BTW - do the other executives ever ask you why you're on a Mustang site during the work day?

Iodom, I am in the same boat as you. I am supposed to put my GT order in by today and have been on the fence as to order or wait. I am going with the manual myself. I am a lazy hiney these days and my other vehicles are auto but they arent Mustangs
Im going with the stick. Only thing I dont like about the stick is you cant get remote start. You can but its a pain in the butt. But hey I can manually start it and get by I am sure
I havent had to make a decision thats torn me like this in a long time. My wife just wants me to make it so I stop exquisite feeling release of liquid waste product and moaning about it

I found this in the FAQ section on these forums. It says if you lease an 04 SVT you will have first dibbs on the 07 GT500. Kinda stinks that those of us who go buy an 05 and keep the production and profit up for Ford this year wont have first dibbs. I ordered my 05 last night and told the salesguy he better get me the 07 when it is available. He said he would but I know he is full of it.
