The S197 GT's stock foglamps are foglamps. Try driving with JUST the foglamps at 70 mph on the highway at night. They do NOT light up much of the road far ahead, but instead focus on the near ground and peripherals. The stock headlamps will overpower the foglamps at 100 ft and farther.
HIDs throw much more light out at 100 ft, however, DOT regulations limit the amount of maximum light on HIDs. That is how some OEMs manage to use halogens that are almost as bright as HIDs (06-up Chrysler 300C: 65000 candelas vs. 75,000 candela limit for HID and halogens).

I know what you mean, I actually have hit a turtle, was to risky to swerve and miss, I must of dragged the poor guy 1/2 mile probably caught on my K member. If you hit a Gator thats MASSIVE damage. The moral of the story is, If you dont wanna rearend someone dont get on there ***, because the cop wont care. Its all about what you can prove.

Wow, I can't believe this argument is still not settled. They are in fact fog lamps though they were placed too high on the vehicle. They appear to be more for retro asthetics than functionality. My truck came with both driving and fog lamps and the switches for each were activated by the high beam and low beam switches respectively. A driving lamp usually has a spread pattern of only 15 to 25 degrees with a range of well over 500 feet and little or no vertical cutoff. A fog lamp has typically a 160 to 170 degree spread with the same or similar vertical cutoff as a low beam. Typical placement for fog lamps is below the front bumper and driving lamps are usually placed above the front bumper. Driving lamps should not be confused with offroad lamps which are another story completely.
Back in the days of sealed beam headlights, driving lights were very popular since the sealed beam high beams were just about useless. If you wanted a halfway decent high beam you would have to spend lots of bucks on some European sealed halogen headlights that may or may not have been legal.
Our Mustangs have pretty decent high beams but the low beams are less than adaquate. Since daylight savings has gone away for a while I now find myself driving home after dark on a government reservation that is also a wildlife refuge. High beams are the norm unless faced with the occasional oncoming traffic. Then it becomes necessary to slow down so as to not overdrive your low beams. Meeting a gator or a hog at 55 mph can ruin your day completely. Usually you can see their eyes long before you see the rest of them.
