I posted this in a poll a few weeks back but I think it got lost during all the server stuff. Well to recap the problem comes from the plastic part that surrounds the Auto shifter. In the pic I included the part I am talking about is chrome, it's right next to the silver of the shifter. What happens is from moving the shifter from park to drive and back (and no I am not rough on cars ) the plastic piece will lift up out of the center. Nothing major but it pisses me off.

Now for the possible fix, I say possible because I only figured this out yesterday and don't know if it works 100% yet. It seems to though.

1. What you do is remove the piece, this can be hard because the gap that is there can be too small up get you finger under to lift it up and out, what I did was I took a sheet of paper and folded it in half to give it strength. Then slide the paper under the part and hold the paper at both ends and lift.

2. The part will come up and out. You can see that there are 4 ribbed grips that are supposed to hold the part in place.

3. on each of those bend them outward (they are flexable but be careful.)

4. After they are bent out bend the tips that back in. Making the ribbed grips look like a letter P

5. Slide the part back in to place making sure that all 4 ribbed grips line up with the 4 slots in the base of the shifter. That should do it.

I will post if this actually fixes this 100%, I remember being the only one who had/posted this problem but someone else could have it later. I will also try to add pictures of the shifter to make this more clear.

As a side note, DO NOT do this if it is cold out side and when I say cold I mean 65 and lower. The plastic will be too cold and could snap.

For anyone interested this fixes the problem 100%. I does require a few adjustments but once I got it correct it does not lift up any more. Now should I bill Ford for my warranty work

Vista, I noticed the shifter bezel in the picture is chrome. Is yours? Do you know how to get one in chrome? I tried to get an answer from 05stangkc, but he didn't help. I'd appreciate if you could give me the info. Thanks!

For anyone who might have this problem I have come up with another fix for it. Around the 4 tabs that go into the shifter that I mentioned bending, you can instead take some felt and cut it to the verticle length of each tab and then glue or tape the felt on to the tabs and then re insert the shifter bezel.
