Auto-Engine protection???

So a car pulls out in front of me, and decides to go super slow, almost seemed intentional. I was in third and I wanted to pass and blow their doors off (I was a little edgy from a bad day at work). I dropped into second, and floored it. I was just about to shift into third when the RPMs dropped suddenly and the car hesitated. At first I thought I hurt something...but someone mentioned that the car might have a cutoff if you hit the RED on the RPMS. Is that true? I guess I shouldn't have punched it like I did....

Rev-Limiter. You just needed to either not have down shifted or shifted back into third a fraction sooner. No harm.

Redline is at 6000 RPM, 6250 triggers the fuel shutoff. It doesn't hurt the engine at all, it does it to protect itself. I hit the limiter all the time, but I have a manual and it's hard to stay away from those high revs when it sounds so good up there!!

The engine does sound great when it roars...but I'm sure the long term effects on the engine hitting the rev limiter all the time can't be good for it.

Sorry, I should have clarified... when I say "all the time" I really mean maybe once or twice a week I'll find the limiter. The rest of the time it's kept well under control.

The limit is set well below the danger zone. Your fine, about the only way you can over rev the engine is by mis shifting into too low a gear while the car is moving, say like 4th to 1st.
