Found out it doesn't bolt right in. SHM swapped out the stock 5spd for a Tremec TKO 6spd and did a lot of mods to make it fit and work correctly.

"SHM replaced the stock 5 speed transmission with a Tremec TKO 600 transmission, knowing full well, that there was no chance the stock transmission would survive long behind 600 hp. SHM have developed a remote gear change mechanism to locate the shifter in the correct position in the 2005 mustang, and we have adapted a hydraulic throwout bearing assembly to the TKO 600, to be compatible with the hydraulic clutch which comes stock in 2005 Mustang. We also designed and built a new transmission crossmember and mount, and a new driveshaft assembly in order to complete the installation. The result looks like it came from factory, and the shift quality is great. Backing up the transmission is an aluminum flywheel, HD pressure plate and HD 26 spline clutch disc."

Prob easier to put in a beefier 5spd than try and swap in a 6spd.

Which would be more durable?

T-56 or 3650 + mods costing a fraction of the T-56 swap?

The TKO 600 is still a 5 speed. The 600 stands for the amount of torque that can be put into it.

My fault, you are correct. But if they had to do that much work to bolt in a 5spd imagine what it will take to do a 6spd. The problem lies in with the 05/06 hydraulic clutch assembly. It would be cheaper just to beef up the stock trans then try and swap any thing else in. I'm sure as time goes by the aftermarket companies will make stronger transmissions that will bolt right in.

As long as your not going to be putting in a supercharger I say wait till the thing breaks and have one overnighted when you need it lol.

That's what I intend to do!!! Drive it till the stock trans gives out then go with a beefier 5spd.

Please note...for those of you that looked at the picture of the Shelby GT500 interior and said that the shifter for the manual T56 looked like it was in the same position as the regular '05's T-3650...that actually isn't a T56 in that car.

The June 2005 issue of Hot Rod has a great article on the preparation of the Shelby Cobra GT500 concept car called "Return of the King". I found this note on page 53... "Unlike the production version, which will have a T56 six-speed, the show car retains the original Tremec five-speed cleverly disguised with a six-speed shift ****."

Who knows where that shifter will eventually end up when they really drop the T56's into place...

Oh of course, I wasn't planning on doing this until the warranty runs out.

What mods will make the transmission more durable?

This is exactly what I wanted to get out of this thread, what was involved in the process.
And 2MFF, I know you can calculate your stuff, I just ran the numbers, didn't mean to imply you couldn't. Heck, you have a calculater on your site as well! So anyways, thanks for your input, and thanks everyone for your opinions.

Can't you gat t56s that can handle 900 ft-lbs? I rembember in an issue of MM&FF that they were doing a tranny rebuild and in a side thing they mentioned that you can get t56s that can handle 900 ft-lbs of torque. That tranny must be able to last forever in a 500hp car.

When Tremec does put the T-56 in the Shelby, they'll have the remote shifter location and hydrualic clutch problem worked out and in production so when the warranties run out for those who might want to, the parts will be there!!! There is already a remote shifter setup for the TKO-series for installation in anything!!
