I was surprised to see the prices on some of the t-56 transmissions. It used to be $2,800 the cheapest, now, you can find some of them for 1,300-1,600!!! So my question is, can it be done! besides the flywell and driveshaft being different, what other changes (especially to the interior) do you think the car would have to undertake in order to accomodate a 6 speed? I figured the GT500 is doing it, why couldn't the mustang GT do it as well! Opinions and thoughts....

This is one of the mods I am actually considering doing. From what I understand it should bolt right in. Although you may have to change shift linkage and/or the clutch. I'm trying to find out if the trans mount will have to be changed or modified in any way. Still researching this part.

Why? If you changed automatic transmissions, you would have to so the car would know when to shift, but I don't see the necessity with a manual.

Keep them coming! If you know of someone here in TMS that did a swap between 5 to 6 speed on older models, they might know what else is needed!
I agree with holderca1, I don't think the computer would have to be changed because the car doesn't need to know when to shift like it would if it was an automatic.

I have been thinking about doing this mod as well, where did you find the T56 for $1,300?

Just seems to me this car is so computer sensitive about everything so there might be something more than just swapping transmissions. We'll know for sure when someone does it!

Nah, you don't have to worry about me, it will probably be a couple years before I do it anyway.

Hey, well, wishful thinking, I can't buy it either... but at least I know they are there, that it's not $2,800 for the cheapest price!
Anyways, there's a TMS member, 2mff, he did a 5-sp to 6-sp on his 66. I sent him a PM, hopefully he stops by and gives us his opinions

That's what I was thinking... how far back? that would be good if we had some numbers (even if they were estimates), that way we would know how much of the interior would have to be tored up!
Another question, would the transmission be longer where the actual body would have to be cut to accomodate? what about the crossmember (that's how it's called, right?). For the older models, a custom one had to be built until a couple of companies started building them... things like that would be good to have opinions on I think..

Why would the shifter need to be moved?

What transmission are they using for the 07 GT500? Richmond or Borg-Warner or... I don't know if there are any others, those are the most common ones... it seems as if the shifter is in the same place, doesn't it?

It's the Tremec T-56, Tremec bought the design from Borg-Warner.

Hey guys,
First off, why would anyone take the time to convert from the 5 speed to a T-56? All you are getting is 2 overdrives. Not really a performance mod.
I have been throwing around the idea of putting a Richmond in my 05, but nothing serious yet. I'll think about this a little more and post later if I think of anything.

Well yes and no, it is a performance mod at higher speeds. Personally I think there is a too big of a gap between 4th and 5th on the TR-3650.
