'08 seat belt extender arm on b-pillar, purpose?

For some reason my '08 Bullitt has this sort of seat belt extender piece that holds the seatbelt out further from the interior b-pillar of the car. Problem is this piece rattles. Does anyone know why this is here, what it's purpose is, and if it can be removed? Thanks.

They put it there to make it easier to get to the seat belt. You should be able to remove it since the previous models didn't have one.

I would look at tightening it down, It is a very handy feature, you will miss. Mine does not rattle in the up or down position

My '05 and '06 did not have this feature and the seatbelt went straight across my neck - not good. Doesn't do that now with the extender, well at least not as bad. I don't know why they ever took the retainers off the seatback corner - they totally solved the problems of reaching for the belt and worrying that I will survive the crash only to be choked to death by my seatbelt.

Well if the belt didn't choke you, you'd wish it had after you saw yer baby in pieces...

This was new for '08?! Wow, I didn't know that. The seat belt extender is literally the most useful interior touch I've seen since cupholders (don't laugh, I've owned a couple German cars....) and wouldn't think of getting rid of it even for a second! With the extender I can grab the seat belt with my left hand, pass it to my right and click in without turning over my shoulder. My Scion tC needed the extender really bad (ouch!)....

Yeah Lynda, definitely agree with Arrow! Ha!

Can this bolt right in to the older cars, or were there other parts that changed or new holes somewhere?
