X pipe vs. H pipe

I'm looking at getting rid or my stock catted H pipe and getting either a catted X pipe or a better H pipe to improve the sound. My car isn't blown so I'm not looking for performance. Just something cheap that sounds good

h-pipe for sound, the x pipe provides more power than the H. The x pipe balances out the torque curve while the H pipe is more for sound dynamics. When the exhaust gases pass the opening in the X this creates a low pressure area thus improving scavenging it does however have a lower tone than the h-pipe. The 90* turn the exhaust gases make for the cross over in the H pipe are more designed for sound vs performance.

Agree with the comments. That being said the only back to back dyno test that I have ever seen where the sole variable was swapping out an or/x for an or/h on the same car, same day, same dyno was a difference of approximately 3 hp & tq as I recall favoring the X.

The test was conducted on the new coyote and was done by the SvTP head admin Sid.

The hp gains were not deemed "significant" so buy the sound you want more than the performance as the difference is small (at least in this test).

Granted different car, different exhaust etc.....

thanks! i dont care about performance cause i know exhaust does nothing for that. its purely a sound preference. ive always heard that X pipes are raspier and louder than the H pipes and i dont know if thats just cause most people swap to the or/x instead of catted or if it had to do with the x or h??

not true, the gains are the sum of all the parts...true in all areas.

I'm not boosted though so it's not going to do more than 2 or 3 hp

Taken from my post in the 05-09 section but applies equally well here:

Ahh the X vs H argument! Here's the skinny, yes, X flows better than H, and yes, better flow equals more power. How much more power? On a stock or bolt ons car, not a lot. Definitely single digit differences. On a ~3500lb car that already has upwards of 300hp you're not going to feel a difference in power between the two, even if the dyno proves there is one. Now on a really heavily modified car where you absolutely need every bit of flow possible then yes, X is definitely the way to go, but 99% of us wont ever get to that level of performance.

So how do you choose? Sound. Pure and simple. Listen to a bunch of cars on youtube or whatever and figure out what you like. There is a big difference in sound between the two. I think the easiest way to describe it is that the X pipe makes a raspier, almost more 'exotic' definitely more 'modern' sound whereas the H makes a deeper, more 'old school muscle' tone. Of course your axle backs will have an affect on this as well. It's all down to personal preference, some like the raspiness of the X, some don't.

For example, here's two videos of my car with a pypes off road X pipe and magnaflow axle backs. The first video is a WOT run through a few gears, the second is inside the car just driving around showing the 'daily drive' sort of volume and tone.

Thanks for the help! I really appreciate it. I know I won't gain much power. I just want good sound. My car is a little over 315rwhp cause of some changes in compression and internals being swapped. Like I said, I'm just looking for a raspy sounding exhaust with not a lot of drone noise
