When I was home on vacation and took the car cross country I noticed a ticking sound coming from the engine that goes up and down with the revs. Sound familiar to anyone? I had the car checked out before I started the trip, tune up/oil change and it was given a clean bill of health. They weren't looking for that specifically though.

Describe the ticking: metallic? Which side of the engine? Sounds high in the Engine or Low? Does it happen when the engine is warm or cold? How often does it happen?

It's consistent. Never ending unless I turn the stereo up. Maybe metallic and it sounds like it is coming from the center of the engine. High side.

One time on my dad's car the belt he had on was poorly made and had something sticking off of it. Tick, tick, tick.

I too hear a ticking sound coming from my mustang. I can especially hear it from 1,500 to 2,000 rpms. I hear it most when I am driving the car in a parking lot at very slow speeds. Once I started driving fast I cannot hear the ticking. Interestingly, my cousin also has a mustang GT 01 and has the same noise, except mine is louder. I have 80k miles and have had that sound ever since the car was new. However, I noticed throughout the years that the sound has been getting louder. Does anyone know what this is from? I gave up on all of the sounds my stang makes. It's a ford what can I expect.

My 03 Cobra has the same problem. I mostly hear it when I am sitting in the drive thru or if I am next to a wall were the sound bounces off and I can hear the motor. I have yet to switch over to synthetic oil, I wonder if that might help.

Head problem? The Mach engines have been known o Tick Tick Tick -- and it was a head problem.

Does the car seem sluggish or idle strangely, or anything like that?

Not really sluggish. The idle can go up and down while at a light but nothing major. What up G Dawg? Where you been hiding?

I have this very same problem. I've been told it can be rockers, cams not getting enough oil, exhaust leak, bad cats, and a ton of other things. I think mine might be bad cats because my car is starting to smell really bad when I drive it. I'm taking it to the shop this week to get it taken care of.

I think the problem with the Mach 1s was traced to an oil pressure issue.

That sounds right, now that you mention it.

Hangin out, mostly reading. We're three people short at work now, so it's been a bit crazy. Anyone know any .NET developers that wanna move to Nashville?

But anyway, it could be nothing at all. May be best to just watch it. Otherwise, a quick check by a mechanic may be your best bet.

And the price of any repair might just be the determining factor if I should get a newer car or not like I discussed before.

Good to hear you are still around. Thanks for the info, first thing when I get back is a visit to the Ford service department.
