When you say it doesn't work, describe. There was a TSB for some late model 96 and early 97 Mustangs. It had to do with the odometer not moving and a slight rattle noise under the column. It was about there not being enough grease in the cable and the cable would rattle due to the vibration of the metal cord not moving in the housing. I had a 96 GTS that had this problem. The dealer had to regrease the cable to get it to work. The speedo and tach would move, just not the odometer.

Most of the time it won't move at all and then every so often it would show the true rpm and then sometimes the tac will go crazy and bounce from the start to the end of the gauge a few times and then stop working again.

The tach has nothing to do with the speedo and odometer. They are mechanically driver. Mother tach is electrical. Most likely you have a bad electrical connection.

I suggest you get a chiltons and look it up in there most likely it will have it and the procedure I wouldn't really take someone's word for it that thinks they know what they are doing

Tachometer not working

Check your connections on the back or your instrument panel. Mine did that after I changed out bulbs. My connections were loose.
