I have a '98 GT, and at low speeds, I get a moan that is coming from the rear-end of the car. Has anyone had this problem? I am thinking it could be a rear-end bearing, but that is only a guess.

Sounds like it could be a bearing starting to wear out causing parts to not line up properly.

Has anyone performed a gear install? How many miles are on the rear end?

Most bearings in the rearend will last well over 100k miles BUT I have seen a couple of pinion bearings go out a little before. If someone has done a gear change or if you race a good bit, it could be a number of things. bearings, improper gear lash, or bad 'spider' gears

Car's got 97k on it. As far as I know, it has never had anything done to the gears. I have had it since 20k miles. I was thinking pinion bearing as well. Anyone know how much that will cost? I mean is it a huge ($1000+) job, or something more minor.

i don't know what rates are where you live, but a pinion bearing is about $10-$15 and I personally would charge about $100 labor

If you have access to a press, you could do it yourself

I just started to hear something similar to that in my 98 GT. It sounds like a lower tone break squeal. Mostly at low speed and when I turn. Could it be the same problem?

I took mine to a mechanic, had the diff cover pulled, and checked all the bearings, gears, the motion, etc. and found nothing. It has been doing it for a year, and the guy told me if it were a bearing or something, it would not come and go as it does, and further, it would not last a year. He came to the conclusion that I had glazed a brakepad, which is causing the sound. I am fairly certain at this point it is not the rear end, or any wheel bearings for that matter. At some point when I have time, I am going to take off the rear pads and lay a quick piece of 120 sandpaper to them to try and knock any glaze off of them.

By the way, what you described is identical to what I have going on.

sounds like brake dust. Just haul the wheels and drums off, and take an air hose to it.
