Fuel leak

Alright I have a very small fuel leak where my filler neck meets my fuel tank,I've been reading up on this and discovered that it's prob a gasket gone/going bad. And I also read that the ford dealership will charge 300plus dollars to change the gasket. So I'm going to attempt to do this myself. Does anyone have any experience on changing this gasket? Help, tips, info etc will be greatly appreciated. Oh and is the gasket a only ford part? Thanks

When it comes to dealing with gasoline at the tank level, I let someone else do it. Does it have to be a dealership? Do you have a prefered mechanic?

It is a Ford only part. There are new ones on eBay for $20 shipped or just go to a dealer and they'll charge $30. You need to be very careful replacing this as damage can occur to the filler neck and that's a couple hundred bucks if its damaged; you need to be prepared to drop at least the right side of the fuel tank with a floor jack to get the right angle to remove the filler neck. Coat the new grommet with some motor oil, side it in, re insert the filler neck. One question....you're not throwinig a P0455 or 457 CEL? Cause I damaged mine during a fuel pump install and the **** thing is throwing that code becuase I keep putting off replacing the grommet...its sitting on my kitchen counter

Thanks for the advice, really appreciated. Actually I'm throwing a P0442 code I believe it is,the one where it says small evap leak. I wasn't sure if the gas tank would have to be dropped or not. I heard it doesn't but I heard it's a lot easier if it is dropped. I was just kind of wanting to know if this is something I can do myself as well without to many problems. Just cause I'm fairly new to these cars and I dig em and i would like to do as much as I can without getting somebody to do it. Ya know?

Yep....442 is the small one. You can do it yourself just go slow and leave yourself time. There's a write up for this job without dropping the tank on stangnet...let me track it down in the morning

BTW....are you experiencing any rough idle and/or sluggish acceleration since this issue started?

Actually yes it seems a little sluggish and the idle seems a little rough. Actually I notice it when the check engine light is on, everytime I fill up I disconnect my batt so I can rid the check engine light(I can't stand that light) and about halfway through a tank of fuel the light comes back and everytime I check it with the code detector and same code P0442. Does the small evap leak have something to do with the way it runs? I'd imagine it would mess with the air/fuel mixture a little.

It may. Mine is doing the same thing and several members on other forums have pointed out that the tank is connected to lines that run back to the engine to combust the fuel vapor and is a closed system...so that being the case, the grommet failing is, essentially a vaccum leak. Now in my case I've also identified a failing camshaft synchronizer for some of my rough running and power issues, but I still think that grommet is part of the problem....I'll know for sure when that synchronizer is replaced this weekend.

Thanks for the inspiration...went home tonight....looked at the lonely gromett in the kitchen and spent 3 hours unscrewing a ton of stuff, moving it around and got the neck out and back in without dropping the tank. Now to see if the 455 and 457 codes go away.......

Dude that's awesome! I went to the dealership today to get mine and get this the dude at the dealership recognized my company name from my work uniform and it turns out that the company I work for has an account with that ford dealership so I got a discount on my grommet,I spent just under 17 bucks for it. BONUS lol. So after changing yours is there anything I need to look out for? Will basic handtools do the job?

If you've got a decent socket set, you'll be fine. I would really advise sticking a jack under the right side of the tank and undoing the right strap to allow that side of the tank to be shifted and moved. It is REALLY tight getting the neck out and you have to oil the old grommet as you do to assist in getting it out and do it slowly and carefully lest you damage the end of the neck. Here is the Stangnet write up. If you have any questions on it, feel free to post or PM me considering its fresh in my mind.

Its not a hard job, but at times it was very aggravating...so be warned in advance if you tend to swear when you get frustrated with stuff like auto work (I do), you might want to keep the garage door closed.......
