cylinder heads
Since joining this board, I have asked for recommendations on 5.0 top end mods. i have noticed that most or alot of you seem to like the afr 165 or 185 heads. How do these compare to the ford gt40x xtra performance turbo swirl heads or just the gt40 turbo-swirl head? What are your reasons for picking the afr's? I am starting to work on putting together a combo for my 5.0. Thanks for everyones input so far to all of my questions.
Well teh reason that many go with AFR's are because they come ported out as much as they can directly from AFR. Sure you pay more for them than most other alum. heads, but once you go to porting your other alum heads to get near the performance as the AFR's, you are probably at or over the price you paid for the AFR heads.
Im not that familiar with GT40 series heads, but i've always heard the GT40p's were the best as they were a high flowing aluminum head.

AFR's are very good cylinder heads, nice castings with a basic CNC port on the heads producing good flow numbers. I have a set on my 347 and the only trouble I ran into was matching a victor 5.0 intake (rectangle port) to the 185's sorta oval port.
Then again everybody has their favorite. As for the Gt40p heads, they are probably the best factory 2v windsor head ever produced (yeah BOSS 302 heads included) and unfortunately were only installed on the V8 explorers. If you want a good low buck head the GT40p isn't to bad. I have a set going on a mild 302, nothing fancy just undercut stainless valves and a port matched intake and thats it.
