2k GT with a rod knock
2k GT with a rod knock
Looking for opinions on a rebuild. I figure at the least I will need a regrind on the crank and new bearings, or new crank and new bearings (around 350.00 for new reman)<--- probably cost a few more bucks going new/reman over a regrind? Its been a few years since I've rebuilt an engine so I don't really know what machine work cost these days.
If the connecting rod mics out good, do you think I can get away with just the crank, new bearings and gaskets? The engine has about 60k miles on it. Looks like I will have to pull the engine so is there something else I should/could do to add a few hp with out adding to much cost?
Should I look into a 5.4 swap for alot more $$ or just rebuild the 4.6
What do you think a 5.4 swap would cost to do beyond the cost of the engine? What else would I need?
Thanks for your input!

2k GT with a rod knock
Well something caused the Rod Knock. Normally it's lack of oil or high RPM's. You will find that out at tear down. Mike everything out and do a visual on the bearings. If it was an oiling problem inspect the cams and valve train. You need to catch the knock before it comes apart and you wife is mad as hell.
If it is confined to the lower end (Rods and Mains), Have all rods checked and resized as needed, replace all bearings. Inspect the rod wrist pins, inspect the pistions for size, taper and cracked skirts. The crank may be fine, but only measurement will confirm. If it's OK, just polish and champher the oil holes. Replace the main bearings. Replace the Oil Pump!
If you want a cheap edge, have the lower end balanced while out of the car. This includes the crank, rods, pistons, balancer and flywheel. Inspect the cylinder hone pattern. Mike the bores and pistons. If all is sound, install a new set of rings. The file to fit type are the best for a worn engine. If the hone is partly worn, then rent or buy a Hone to establish a good cross pattern for the type of rings selected.
I would skip the 5.4 unless you get a great price from a wrecked Cobra.
Good Luck!
