fuel leak

my daughter has a 95 mustang. It is leaking fuel on the passenger side. When you look under the car you see the tank on the passenger side is soaked. Do you think the whole tank needs to be replaced or just patched? Kelli

Leaky tanks are a PIA. If it's not actually leaking around a seal or connection, you'll need another one IMO. Patches never hold up. '95 is a popular year... maybe you can pick one up cheap at a salvage yard

I had the same problem with my óther' ZX2. It was the weld between the two halves. I drove the car until the gas was no longer leaking, cleaned up the rust from around the seam and used metal epoxy which you can find at any hardware store. Just thumbed it into and around the weld and smoothed off with my finger. Then after an hour I spray painted it so it didnt look like it had been repaired. Was fine for 6 months after and then we sold it. $5 fix just make sure you get the surrounding area clean and you mix the putty well in your hands before application. Hope this helps.

Could it be the filler neck?

I took it to the shop today and they thought it was the filler neck seal that needs to be replaced. He said he would have to take the whole fuel tank off. My husband was going to do it but if the whole tank has to be taken off, then we will probably let the shop do it.

fuel leak

same thing with wifes 2003 v6 stang. Leaking were filler pipe goes into side of tank!! Is this an easy fix? can the filler pipe be removed from tank with out removing tank? I am hoping it is just some kind of seal.I will have to wait until fuel gets below the filler pipe to see.

My Roush ('03) is doing this also as we speak...the leak is coming from the filler pipe to tank grommet...this is a known problem in '94-'04 cars. I just got my new grommet last night from my dealer and Ford has updated its design. Fairly easy install, need to possibly drop the tank a bit to wiggle the filler pipe out, no big deal just make sure you do not stretch any lines on the tank, they are held in by clips on the tank itself. One thing to make sure of...coat the new grommet with vaseline or similar product as you will fight getting the pipe through otherwise...here is the part # off of my new one.....right off the grommet itself...2R33-9072-AB....and the bag it came in says part # 2R3Z-9072-AA.
