Transmission issue

Recently traded for a 90 5.0 5 speed, I'm having trouble going into 2nd and 3rd at high rpms in first/ second it grinds like I'm missing the gear but I'm not. Wondering what could be the problem driving normal it goes into gear fine? Clutch cable maybe?

Sounds like a worn out clutch to me. Any idea how old the clutch is?

Doubt it is the cable but I'll play. where abouts in the travel is the engaging..close to the floor or high up?

this is a common issue with the T5, if you need more proof google 2nd & 3rd grind and you will get pages of the same answer. Blocker/syncro. It needs to be pulled apart and checked to make sure it doesn't have another issue but leaning towards blocker/syncro. rebuild kits are pretty cheap. there are videos available on how to rebuild a T5.

Tony at Astro perf. sells upgraded T5s for a decent price with core, I have a level 3 from him. great guy and stands by his stuff.

I'm not sure how old the clutch is but when I press the clutch to the floor is when it happens if I'm gonna "slam" it in to the next gear (2nd or 3rd) but only when I'm getting in the car not as if I were driving normal.

correctly adjusted the clutch will begin to grab about 1/2 way up its travel. If the clutch grabs right off or very close to the floor then it is adjusted to loosely and will cause difficulty putting into gears, cause the car to roll on flat surfaces and cuase premature clutch/transmission wear.

If the clutch grabs to high or at the very top of it travel then it is adjusted to tight ( or your clutch is wasted if adjusting the cable will not fix the high pedal!! ) a clutch that is giving to high will cause it to constanly disengaging when driving.

you want the clutch to grab about 1 1/2 inches or so of the floor and have about 1 inch of end play on the pedal when the clutch is released.

what shifter does it have?

Stock shifter isn't great for "power shifting" it doesn't have stop bolts and tends to over extend the shift forks causing bent shift forks.my advice is to go down the list. get the clutch properally adjusted this will guide you along,a worn clutch can also cause gear grind during shifts. it may be a clutch issue or tranny issue. could be either, I do know that 2nd to 3rd gear is normal problem it is also easy to miss with the stock shifter while speed shifting. the shift forks are also prone to damage from speed shifting. I use the mgw shifter, haven't missed a 3rd gear shift with it.
