So clutch it hurts

I have a 88 5.0 lx I just bought and it's pretty well off but my clutch is giving me problems. I can drive and have it in any gear, but still be able to wiggle the shifter around anywhere. The way it was explained to me was that I have an aftermarket transmission with a stock clutch. The size of the bolt or screw that's supposed to connect the transmission to the shifter is two different sizes so I cut down some pipes to fill in the space but still have some play. The problem is every day or so I have to tighten it back up, and if I tighten it too much it feels like I'm bending the connection. Any suggestions or advice ? How do I find the correct shifter ?

Not sure of the setup but maybe use some locitie on the hardware? The aftermarket transmission with a stock clutch sounds weird to me. That shouldn't cause a problem.

The bottom of the shifter has two holes that you put screw through to attach to a prong sticking up from the transmission. The holes on the bottom of the shifter are wider than the holes on the prong. There should be some type of filler in there but I couldn't find a piece. I took two different pipes, one that fit the screw to the transmission, and the second wide enough to fill the rest of the space.
