My brother sails as an officer on an oil tanker and he's told me countless times how it all goes to the same refinery.
That aside, I've always bought gas at Wal-Mart and have never had an issue! Premium of course though.
However, a couple times at Chevron and my old car would have issues and throw codes. So, I think as a whole... just go to somewhere reputable and use additives when needed. Avoid rusty old stations though!!!

I don't know if that's evolved from EPA and CARB mandates where (say in the case of CA) you can have very different blends of fuel depending on where your at in a county or the a state (in Va for example, I think they use more oxygenated fuel in northern Va due to pollution issues) so its easier just to provide a custom blend at the end point rather than setup a custom run at the refinery.
