What you're saying is that it is so expensive that potential quality differences are irrelevant.

My brother sails as an officer on an oil tanker and he's told me countless times how it all goes to the same refinery.

That aside, I've always bought gas at Wal-Mart and have never had an issue! Premium of course though.
However, a couple times at Chevron and my old car would have issues and throw codes. So, I think as a whole... just go to somewhere reputable and use additives when needed. Avoid rusty old stations though!!!

That's true, what goes and comes out of the refinery is pretty much the same product but what goes into the tanks at the pump is where you get the actual product differentiation.

I don't know if that's evolved from EPA and CARB mandates where (say in the case of CA) you can have very different blends of fuel depending on where your at in a county or the a state (in Va for example, I think they use more oxygenated fuel in northern Va due to pollution issues) so its easier just to provide a custom blend at the end point rather than setup a custom run at the refinery.

I've never used Shell because their stations just seem ghetto compared to other company stations. :76 or Mobil:
