This is my first time ever pulling a engine out. I need to pull out my 5.0 engine off my 1987 mustang because the back freeze plug is leaking bad. I need tips and small tricks I can do to make this process a lot easier. I anybody can help me out with that I would really appreciate it.

Thanks,

I found a mechanic that can pull it out. He said $300 and it will take him 2 hours. He's been through a lot of mustangs he said. Is that a good deal?

It would take you a day, maybe. And you could pocket that $300. It's really not that hard. If you're not in a rush, I would do it yourself. Then, you have the experience! Me and other members would, of course, be there if you need us. :good:

I live in Sacramento California. And I would do it by myself but I work out of town all week and get the weekend off before I go back to work out of town Monday morning. So I like to just spend time with family. I don't mind doing little things but a whole day project take all my time away. If I have him pull engine all I want to do is change all freeze plugs and degrease the engine before putting it back in.

I fully understand the family time part. Why just to replace freeze plugs? Did you have one bust? If so, I would take a close look at heads, etc. If not, prolly not worth pullin engine over. Not pickin at you, just tryin to understand where you're comin from man.

The freeze plug I need to replace is behing the engine block and everybody tells me I have to take engine out. Only way to fix it. And while its out why not replace all. Heads are good I think. Car runs just fine. Just leaks out that back freeze plug it looks really corroded. Leaks once in a while just want to get that fixed.

I agree then: replace all. Was it sitting? If not, pay close attention to heads too. Let us know bud! Hope it all works out for you.
