Hello all, I'm new to the site, but I have a question you may be able to help with. I have a 1968 Coupe 289 2v PS,PDB,Air, and auto with matching #'s and 74k miles on her and I'm the 2nd owner. I love the car but she is ugly Sunlit gold w/white vynil top and a Nugget/kiwi (ivy) interior all original.
Now my question is if I change the int color and ext colors will that make her value less and would it kill me at shows?
Right now she has 3 mods a 4 core radiator, petronix ignition and a third brake light in the rear window.
I plan on removing the rear light but I added the ignition and radiator. but I'd love to keep the white top but paint the lower half a deep purple and do a parchment int. would i be shooting myself in the foot?

Hmmm, that really depends. Are you planning to show it in a concourse class? If that's the original milage and it is unrestored, it may be worth a little more to someone as a survivor, but if you have no intention of selling, and want a driver for you to enjoy, I think a change to your colors is fine. Besides the milage and potentially original paint, there's nothing particularly remarkable about your car (I'm in the same boat), so you have more freedom to make it yours. Sorry for the indirect answer, but it's not a black & white issue.

If you aren't attached to this particular car, you could always sell to someone who appreciates the originality and buy another coupe to make your own.

hey, Mber, does that pic remind you of your old car? B)

.....done well, a paint change to a more popular color will enhance the value of a C-code, not harm it. They call it "Resale Red" for a reason . Honestly speaking, your car wouldn't have unusual value now since Sunlit Gold was a very popular color back then (only God knows why.... ), and your car has more than, say, 2,000 documented miles or something like that....

Go for it! B)

I, personally, like the look of it now, save for the hearse medallion on the sail panel. It makes the car "different" because everyone changes that color....usually to RED. :bang: You'd be surprised at the change in the look that just a set of wheels can make.

What kind of shape is the paint in now? Is it original or a repaint? Those are factors that can help decide. If the car is all original then I wouldn't touch it. You would probably get as much attention and comments about its originality as you would if you changed colors. Especially if you go to something like a purple. It's just not a "classic, time honored" color. Since you ask about the change in value I assume you intend to sell it. If so then I think you'd be better off sticking to what you have unless you plan on doing a complete restoration (ground up).

My first Mustang was a 68 Sunlit Gold coupe, but it had a black vinyl top. You might consider changing just the top, as a new one is well under $100 and see what you think.

The value of a color change will depend on the color you choose. To be safe, you might choose a color that was originally offered in 68.

I'm curious about the Landau bars. Dealer option, regional trim package, or aftermarket. I can't find any info on 68 Landaus.

And by the way, the hubcaps on the car are deluxe caps for 68, and fairly rare. Don't give them away.

As far as I know the landau bars came with the car, I bought the car out of probate of the original owners death. But I did get some info from his widow. She stated he had the car repainted in 80 and had the light installed at that time also. Other then that he had done nothing but drive the car ocassionally. It was bought in Vegas and has been here all its life, and garaged. I have restored the front and rear suspentions and replaced the dash pad, but the car is in wonderful shape. Heck it even had the original bias ply spare tire in the trunk, and wax around all the windows

I do plan on keeping her, but you never know. And I hardly see a classic mustang anymore that has not been modifide or at least repainted a differant color. As for showing her, I do and keep planning to but MCA rules are a joke and I do not plan on making her a trailer queen, She was built to drive and thats what she'll do

Thanks all for the replies, I'll still have to think about this.

I agree with Mberglo. You can do alot with just a top change and a set of wheels and tires. Probably a whole lot cheeper to. I did a little chop on your car to give you and idea. ( used my wheels and tires).
Hope this helps you in what ever you decide to do. B)

See! What'd I tell ya? Those wheels really make a difference. The top color looks good too.

You're right about the MCA shows. You'd get eaten alive if you change ANYTHING. heck, you probably would anyway if it's a driver. Also, you mention all the other Mustangs being repainted and modified......be different and stick with your original color.

OR just do what YOU want. It's YOUR car.

Hopefully, I can help to clarify a couple of misconceptions about MCA shows and rules in this thread.

As for showing her, I do and keep planning to but MCA rules are a joke and I do not plan on making her a trailer queen, She was built to drive and thats what she'll do
There are many different MCA classes. Councours Trailered, Concours Street Driven, Street Driven or "Occasional Driven", Daily Driven and Modified. The MCA rules for Street Driven do not judge on authenticity. In other words, you can change color and still enter an MCA judged show and not get peanalized.

As for not making a car a trailer queen, you seem to think that by making something original, it can't be driven. That is where the Concours Street Driven class comes in. My 65 GT Coupe is Concours Street driven and it goes everywhere. That is part of the challenge, meeting a certain criteria of orginality and cleanliness and still driving the car to distant shows. My car has gone from Kansas City to Dearborn, MI, Springfield, IL, Tulsa, OK in the last couple of years as well as the many cruise nights and local shows (I live over 40 mile away from KC).

You're right about the MCA shows. You'd get eaten alive if you change ANYTHING.
Again, only if you enter Concours Trailered or Concours Street Driven do you get point deductions for color changes and other modifications. Street Driven, Daily Driven and obviously modified do not. In fact, Modified classes would be AWARDED points for the color change with the new modified rules.

I just want to try and set things straight, not start some big argument. I am the past Show Director of the Vintage Mustang Club of Kansas City (I did the 2001 Grand National and am working on our 2005 National show) and I think that MCA does a pretty good job accomodating each and every type of Mustang with the classes available. I often hear "I won't enter an MCA show becuase my car isn't councours" when in fact a very low percentage of cars are entered in the concours classes. There are many more Street Driven and Daily Driven cars than concours.

Street Driven cars, by the way, are judged on cleanliness, condition and worksmanship. Undercarriage should be clean but does not have to be detailed.

Thanks for hearing me out.

I think you should make an Eleanor out of it. It's the only way to go.

I dunno... I can't see the "ugly" to save my life! I love the gold with the white top, AND the interior. But then again - I appreciate Lime Gold too! As a matter of fact, I would've probably chosen Lime Gold had a bought a new Mustang back in '67 or '68. One thing to keep in mind: upholstery and carpet shift colors over the years. If you stayed original and just freshened up the interior you may like it a whole lot better.

I am curious though, why your photos have the black vinette...
