Im having trouble figuring out who made my distributor. I either need new points or an Ignitor kit but I cant figure out if I have a FMS dizzy or otherwise. Only number on it is: I23099

Only other mark is on the bearing support, it says Newton NewHaven

 

Well, first off I would not consider staying with points and a condensor unless this is to be concourse correct. That said, if you go pertronix than you only need to know if it is a mechanical or vaccum advance to order the proper one.

Yes, Pertronix claims that they are designed only for opriginal Ford distributors but it is easily modified. I used maybe half the parts it came with since my Accel mechanical distributor (which looks alot like yours) has a one piece base not a removable one and by simply reusing only one hole in the base and spacing it properly from the center the unit worked fine and totally trouble free. At a later time I then drilled and taped a second hole to make sure it is secure but the 6cyl unit only mounts at one point so even that wasn't necessary but I did it anyway.

 

The problem Ive had with the Pertronix kit is the part that slides over the shaft...doesnt fit. Ive tried part number 1281 and 1281D

 

From the portholes in the side of the housing I'd say it looks likes an old Accel distributor, they used chevy points IIRC.

 

Hmmm, that is a new problem. Is the shaft too thick or too thin? I assume then that you have contacted and discussed the issue with pertronix already? Just about anybody's dizzy should be consistent in that aspect so considering this problem it may be best to replace it afterall. Or, if you kept the old points, try and match them up at the parts store and if you find they do match up to chevy as TJ mught remeber, then maybe the chevy pertronix sleeve would fit.

FWIW: My accel did use the ford unit still but I never verified what the old points matched up to when I pulled it, I just assumed Ford.

 

Turns out its an Accel dizzy and Pertronix just came out with the kit for it but Summit doesnt have it listed in there online catalog yet, so I need to call them and order one.

 

Hunh. Well, it looks like you're headed in the right direction now, but I wonder why the regular Ford mechanical unit worked on my Accel but not yours?

When I called pertronix about my problem they had mentioned the unit I got would only work with Ford but that they were looking at an Accel compatible unit and that's when I just chucked the parts that were giving me trouble and only installed what I needed. Of course you weren't that lucky in your case.

I have the 73000 series "racing" dizzy...not sure if thats the difference or not

 

100 days later my part arrives and 2 days later it gets put on (needed longer screws)

Night and day difference! There is NO reason to run points, well worth the $90
