Whine on startup & not turning over all the time
for about a week or so now I get a whine/squeel from my '66 for about a minute or so after I start her up every so often. I think it might be the fan and I was going to replace the belts, and a couple people told me to check my power steering fluid which I'm also going to do. I just wanted to see if anyone else had any insight. I've also been having some trouble turnnig the car over in the morning. Its been cold and rainly lately so I thought that might have something to do with it but I'm not sure.. anyways thanks in advance.
The whine sounds like the belts. Try tightening them if they are not worn or cracked to see if that takes care of it.
The hard starting could be a number of things but could simply be the battery. Auto Parts stores can test a battery for you for free. While you have it out, clean the posts and the terminals on the cables, buildup of crud can reduce the charge.

I second Jay's comments. Batteries tend to have a hard time starting the car in the cold if they have some age on them. Always look for the highest CCA that you can get in the style/size battery needed for your car.
thanks for the advice guys... as for the battery for being the problem for the starts you could be right. I accidently drained my batter about 2 weeks ago when I managed to leave my keys in the car with the radio on.
I was looking at it more today and it is definatly coming from the fan/belts in the front... he I had to cover my ears with the hood up since it was so loud... but it seemed to go away after a minute.

urgh... I seem to be having even more problems now. Today my engine seemed to be making a heavier noise than before... earlier today I added some oil because it was low and then picked up gf... then went to eat but on the way to eat I just sort of felt like the engine was shaking more and making a heavier sound.. definatly something wrong. I guess it could be the oil but i'm like 85% sure that i put the same exact oil in as I did last time. Anyone know what might be wrong? If my gf's father or my dad can't figure out whats wrong i guess I'll drain the oil and put new oil in and see if that helps...
Because it takes a lot of energy to start your car (especially in cold weather), your alternator has to work a little harder. This, combined with more slippery belts (when cold) mean that if your belts are worn or loose they will squeal especially at startup.
Good luck with your diagnosis... B)

As far as the original poster's problem - loose belt squeals, loose belt keeps alternator from charging properly. No big deal to diagnose - TIGHTEN (and/or replace)THE BELT!
