Sound coming from flexplate/flywheel area???

I'm knocking things out one at a time here, and my next issue is a ticking noise coming from my flexplate. I have not been steered wrong on this forum yet.
Here's the deal. It is a '67 coupe 289 with a c4 auto tranny. Its not lifters or an exhaust leak. I listened to it with an automotive stethoscope it is coming from the area directly around the flexplate. It keeps time with the rpm's so it's not speed related. It is loudest right at startup, then goes away for a bit. It returns intermittently sometimes at idle, sometimes accelerating. I'm looking for ideas.
I'd be happy to answer any questions if I've forgotten any important info.
Thanks
Mike

If your pretty confident in the noise coming from the area it may be worth it to drop the tranny and inspect the flex plate, cracks or even a broken/loose bolt. A crack in the flex plate will tend to tick and make a snap noise as RPMs suddenly increase or decrease ... The inertia of the flex plate will open and close slightly at the fractured area... May be worth the look!

I was putting in a new oil pan today and noticed that the teeth on the starter are pretty eaten up. Also the teeth on the flexplate are also eaten up pretty good. I don't know if this has anything to do with my problem, but just an observation.

Also, I think I will drop the tranny soon. The noise isn't horrible, but it drives me nuts not knowing. Thanks for your input.

Make sure the starter is pulling the gear all the way back into the housing
