Hi Everyone, this is my first post in this forum. I have a problem. I have a 1965 Mustang Fastback Gt, and It starts fine and everything but once It runs out of the gas in the Carb. it shuts off. Then I have to sit there and pump the gas to get more gas back to the carb and then it will start again, but once it runs out of gas in the carb it shuts off again. What would make the Fuel pump not work when the car is actually on? I need Help.

I would check or most likely replace the following
1) Gas pump
2) Carburator
3) Ignition switch (bad contacts)

Defective fuel pump and/or clogged fuel filter would be my FIRST choices...

Dont forget that your fuel sender in the tank has a 'sock' in it also to strain the fuel. This clogs often, esp with cars that have sat up for a while.

I would check the operation of the fuel pump, then change out the fuel filter, since that is the cheapest. If the new filter doesn't fix it, you've probably either got a bad pump or a clogged sock in the tank. Be careful checking the pump tho - if the sock is clogged, then the pump may look like it's not working, when in fact it's fine.

Problems like this you generally want to start upstream to avoid replacing every part downstream.

Remove fuel line from gas tank, and dip it in a gascan. If that fixes your problem, your problem is with the fuel sender in the tank. If not, I'd suspect the fuel pump. In my experiences, clogged fuel filters become problems with high fuel flow like highway driving. Should still be able to idle with a bad filter.
