Over heating

Bly a week and a half till the mustang roundup. And my baby is now over heating. I just rebuilt the heads. New thermostat. New coolant. After about 20 miles of freeway driving at 60 mph it creeps to the hot end doesn't quite hit it though. The oil pressure has always sat close to the h on the pressure gauge when I am at a red light and it is close to the over heat point the oil pressure gauge drops to dead center between high and low I am guessing that is from thermal breakdown. Ideas? Maybe crud got in the coolant line from the rebuild and clogged my stat? With the cap off the coolant churns in the radiator but doesn't drop and raise when I throttle it. Also when it is hot their a little bit of foam in the coolant. Ideas would be appreciated.

slowly heating up after a bit of driving usually indicates poor radiator flow .. try flooding the rad with a garden hose while it is hot and see if it cools down a bit .. and it could just be the heat .. how hot is it in washington ? my cars run a little hotter when its` over 100 in bama

It's about 80. I have worried about injecting cold water into the radiator as the engine is all original and am worried about cracking it. Thanks for the idea though I think I am going to pick up coolant system flush give it a cleaning pull the thermostat and check it to see if that helps the flow. I started thinking that the pump is good since the water does churn when throttled. But the question is how well. Pump is only $16 maybe I will replace it to be safe.

U may have already done this, but use a laser temp gauge all over the radiator in different areas. It should be pretty uniform throughout. if not, u have blockage. Mine was doing the same thing and it read almost 30 degrees different in some areas on the rad. put in a 3 core aluminum from mustangs unlimited no more problems.

That is a brilliant idea. I have found my culprit thought blown head gasket leaking exhaust into coolant. Opened it up yesterday after doing a flush and replacing thermostat. And it was full of foam. Oh well I still have a week to rebuild it before the mustang roundup. And I am going to replace the water pump while the top half is off.

- Do you know if Snap-On still carries these sniffer testers? My buddy use to have one from
Matco .. I think it's worth having in my box!

Ahh, must be a different style, the one I'm familiar with uses a sniffer that has a chemical additive that changes colors with the presence of combustion gases.

I was looking for the combustion gas tester and found the "deye" at O'Reilys, but it required a special vacuum pump which they didn't have nor did the guy know about. The deye wasn't on the shelf, but behind the wall in their "commercial" department. Apparently only one guy knew about it. If someone knows where to find, please post as I want it as well.
