Jack placment
Depends on what you want. Doing just one side, or both in the air at the same time? These are my methods. I'm sure others will pipe up here, but hey, never had a problem with it myself... And I always use a floor jack in the shop, or in certain circumstances, a bottle jack, but that's rare. NEVER use the scissor jack unless you simply have to. Ugh. Floor jacks are cheap enough.
Ok, all that outta the way...
One side, lift with the jack at the rear of the front frame rail, and then place stand to the front of that frame rail, lower slowly, leave jack in place, but not supporting the weight, as a backup to the stand. Do work, lower, and repeat for other side.
Both sides, lift with the jack at the center of the K-member, and place stands at the same front area of the front frame rails. This only works if you can get the jack under the car... for example, doing this with my current floor jack on my '06 isn't gonna happen, so I have to lift one side then the other with the above method.
When lifting, of course, always be careful, and smooth, and non-jerky. And definitely you want a smooth lowering jack. If your jack can't be smooth when lowering, replace it or fix it, slamming the car onto the stands is just... wrong, and I'll leave it at that.
If you are doing the rears too (getting it up in the air for all four wheels to come off, say), I'd do the above, then lift the car with the center of the axle, then put stands just in front of the front shackle mounts for the springs.
Some say lifting with the axle is a bad deal(tm), and there are good arguments about that, but... haven't ever had a problem doing it that way. The only other way is to do it one side then another again, lifting at the axle spring perch, placing stand in front of the front shackle mount, then repeating.
I don't recommend lifting the entire side of the car up to place stands on that side, then doing that on the other side... although, in a pinch, that *has* been performed by me...
And *always* chock the wheels. Rolling off the jack or stands is never fun. Just in general, be safe. I hate lifting cars up, because, well, I did have one roll off on me. **** near lost my finger in a scissor jack when it happened. Ugh. HATE scissor jacks... Really bad situation that day...
Anyway, good luck, hope that helps!
