Me and a buddy of mine were talking the other day and the subject made its way around to Mustangs(imagine that). He made a comment about there being a 1964.5 Mustang Fastback. I told him that no 1964.5 fastback Mustang was made. He says that there were a few and that you could tell them apart from the 1965 because they had 2+2 under the 260 or 289 Engine badge. Please help me prove him wrong so i can rub my knowledge in his face(or deny ever writing this)
Thanks in advance for any help.

this guy has probably seen a prototype photo of one, there were a few prototypes, but no 64.5 fastbacks were sold to the public, there is an interesting site with a lot of strange mustnags and if i find it ill post it...

Thumbs down

1964-1/2 MUSTANG Mystique History

The official production of the first mustangs started at Monday, the 9th of March, 1964 at Dearborn. This is roll off date of job "one" which indicates that the real starting was some days earlier, because it took an average of 27,5 hours to build one car. Normaly it should be easy to dertermine the build date if you start checking the VIN of a car, but in this case it's not so easy. Ford decided that the early mustang will get the "65" status from beginng and so every serial number started with 5Fxxxxxx instead of 4Fxxxxxx. This caused a 18th month production time for the 65 mustang! Also the official transition date from 64 to 65 known as the 31st of July there are a lot of hints that the production change feld behind that date. The start of the second production of a 65 mustang was the 17th of August. Before that date a total of 121538 early-mustangs had been build. Regardless what the official view of ford about the model year of this cars, there are reasons enough to differ. So if you are interested to determine surely if a mustang is a 64 1/2 there are some rules which don't have exeptions: - there doesn't exist a 64 1/2 fastback - there doesn't exist a 64 1/2 luxury or GT option - every D,F,U-engine coded early mustang is a 64 1/2 - every 64 1/2 must have an generator - every 64 1/2 must be build in dearborn (march to august) or san jose (13 th of july to august) Also this should be enough to answer the first round of questions. What's about the other over 100 difference between this production years? Also there should be someone who had already listed up the differences, I didn't found him and decided to build up a list by my own. In a first step I set up my 64 1/2 parts page , where you can see some specials. What you see here is my first shot for a complete list and I hope that there are a lot of early-mustang friends out there who will help me to finish it some day ...

To answer your question directly, no there were no "regular production" 64 1/2 Mustang Fastbacks.

I have heard of one of a few preproduction fastbacks that made it to market just before the regular production 65 fastbacks. I haven't seen it in person, so take this with a grain of salt. As far as I know, they did not have 2+2 under the fender "V" emblem. It's supposedly just a regular fastback all of the early 65 tell-tale identifiers. (beveled hood lip, different heater box door, ect.)
